If I were to buy an iPhone 3G for 8GB for $200, how would i go about doing so at the apple store?
do i need to give any billing information?
can i cancel the service and not pay activation and still keep the iphone and jailbreak it?

thanks in advance

To be stight forward, if you buy the 3g and cancel your contract, i think you have 14 days (i might be mistaken) to return the phone, your better off buying a 3g else were (in other words from the AT&T web site....

Edit:

PM me when u get a chance...

Only for purchases at the Apple Store. You do not have to return your iPhone when you cancel your contract. Even if it's the same day you bought/activated your iPhone.

Completely incorrect.

You buy the iPhone, pay activation, pay for one month of service, wait 30 days, cancel your contract, pay the early termination fee, and keep the phone.

If you cancel before 30 days, you either return the phone or are charged all of this plus the unsubsidized cost of the iPhone.

I'm really interested in this at some point,
Can you please cite your sources?
Where I can read it more officially?

Service Cancellation
You may cancel service within 30 days from the activation date to avoid the early termination fee of $175. Thereafter the fee will decrease by $5 each month for the term of the agreement. You will be responsible for all applicable usage fees, prorated access charges, taxes, surcharges or other charges through the termination date. AT&T will refund your activation fee, if any, if service is terminated within 3 days of activation.

You may have to return any handsets and accessories purchased with the service before your account will be cancelled. If you are allowed to cancel service within the 30 day return period, but do not return the equipment within the return period, AT&T may charge you an amount equal to or up to the full retail price of the equipment.

If you paid a security deposit, it will take 1 to 2 billing cycles to process the return of the security deposit. The charges for service used on the account before the service termination date will be applied against the security deposit.

My idea is as follows:

either buy an 8gb from the apple store for $200 or buy from at&t online and pay $200 for a refurbished 16gb. then within 3 days cancel the contract and say that the reception in my work areas are bad as i travel alot and the signal is horrible and im unsatisfied with 3g speeds but i like the phone. in the event i move or change locations and still want to use the service i keep the phone since i payed for it.

what do u guys think?

You have to return the device if you cancel your contract within 30 days, or pay the unsubsidized price.

No matter how sly you think you are, you won't succeed.

And by the way, you didn't "Pay for the phone." You paid part of the price of the phone - the rest you pay for throughout your two year contract. So if you cancel early, you have to pay the rest of the cost of the phone.

What if you walk out, say you could hit in the face by a theif, proceed to pay a friend to beat you up, call the police, and then go to the apple store to let them know you want to cancelyour account, would they let you cancel your account with out paying for it?

ill still try. even if i dont succeed, i will get a full refund. the only thing that will be wasted is my time and high hopes lol

at&t reply

hi sir,
as stated in the contract , once you cancel service in the first 30 days you will need to return the iphone to us or we will charge you the full price of the iphone
in the event you moved or you changed your locations and you still want to use our services give us a call and we will be more then happy to provide you with the latest iphone that we have at time ,
thank you
have i answer all your questions sir
thank you:eek:

what if i didnt buy the iphone from att. according to the terms of service, its for phones purchased from att. although att and apple are hand in hand, its still an apple product, only with att service. if i were to get it serviced, it would go to apple. and what if i already had an iphone? since i didnt purchase it from att it seems that it does not apply

I really hate to be a smarta$$, but do these folks think these companies are stupid ?

Usually, their 1st mistake is they don't bother to research these "bright" ideas they come up with.

Then, when we give them the benefit of our wisdom, it's "I'm still gonna try it".

OK, knock yourself out. Like in all the world, you are the 1st person to come up with this "brainstorm".

Return within 30 days, you have to return the phone, cancel after 30 days, pay an early termination fee.

If I am off base here, you have my condolences !!
