I am interested in buying an iPhone 4 factory unlocked from the UK or Canada.

However, does the phone work in the United States?

I remember someone stating that although they were factory unlocked it would still be locked to the country of purchase. Is this true? Could someone please shed some light on this?

I don't want to end up spending a fortune on a phone which doesn't work in the United States.

Thanks.

I bought an unlocked 3G in Thailand which I activated and used in the UK. You won't have a problem.

Doesn't work in India

My factory unlocked iphone 4, which was purchased in the UK worked with all carriers in the UK, but didn't work with any carrier in India when i was travelling there last month. Had to unlock it temporarily to make it work with BSNL.

Any reasons why Apple? even after paying the full cost of the phone?

That doesn't make any sense.

I don't think the iPhone (or any phone for that matter) is sold with a country lock.

It doesn't make any commercial sense for such a lock to be used.

All iPhone models support the same set of networks. A UK iPhone works with the same carriers that a US iPhone does.

That being said, no iPhone supports T-Mobile USA's 3G frequencies, so if you want to use it on T-Mobile USA you'll be stuck with 2G.

Thats nonsense. What you mean you had to unlock it temporarily?
All unlocked iPhones or cellphones I general will work with any gsm carriers sim card.
