Buying iPhone

I know we will see what happens in a few days when it comes to buying the iPhone, but when Apple says you will be able buy the iPhone in Apple Stores or Apple's online store, how does that work with AT&T? Or will you be able to buy it from Apple unlocked and ready for any network, sans visual voicemail? I'm asking this because I live in the UK and am on a contract on a "very small populated" network so I doubt they will be getting the iPhone when it arrives in the UK. Will I be able to get it sim-free? Thanks.

Who knows what is going to happen for the UK launch but all the iphones launching on June 29th in the US will be locked to AT&T.
