My friend will go to USA at the end of the year. He bought me an iPad and a MacBook Pro from the United States a few years ago, and now I’ll ask him to buy me a new iPhone.

My questions are: in USA you can find the new iPhone 11 unlock phones for the same price as listed on Apple website (999$ for the base OLED model)? If my friend opens the phone box and puts the phone in his pocket to bypass taxes it will work? There is a chance to really buy a new unlocked iPhone, without spending more than what I see on the Apples website?

I’m asking this because here in Europe many people have different opinions about buying the iPhones in USA, and I will be happy to finally understand how the things works.

Thanks a lot

The phone should work in the UK. There will be tax to pay on top and that will vary from state to state. One thing to note are the current duty free limits are much lower than the value of the phone. It is also illegal to take goods over this limit without declaring them. Getting caught is a big fine and criminal offence. It will cause problems travelling to many countries after that.

Depending on where you buy it, add about 5-9% on top for tax. So worst case and rounding up, you’ll pay ~$1100 for the “base” 11 Pro.

It’s illegal to not declare it, but that’s your responsibility.

Thanks for the replies. So 1.100$ for the base model, depending in which state my friend will buy the phone. But it’s difficult to find an unlock iPhone which works with all EU carriers? Or you just go to the Apple Store and buy it there?

Usually the “unlocked and SIM-free” versions from Apple will work in the EU.

The easiest way to tell is after Apple announces the new phones, go to: https://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/ and confirm the model # will work with your carrier.
