I am planning to purchase a Macbook Pro for college in 3 weeks. I am totally stoked about making the transition to an Apple Computer's user.

I am planning to either go with the Macbook Pro 2Ghz 80gig 128gpu, or the 1.83Ghz 80gig 128gpu. Both contain the identical superdrive.

The Macbook Pro 1.83's are going for $1659, the 2.0's are going for $1849, which are tax free on numerous sites, authorized and nonauthorized.

Could purchasing the MBP from a nonauthorized dealer void the applecare 1 year warranty? For instance...B&H Photo/Video is well known and used, but is an unauthorized dealer.

that is not very helpful advice, as the OP already stated he is buying in 3 weeks.

to the OP: while i don't have the answer readily available, i would suggest calling apple to ask them how applecare works for purchases not made at apple, but at a reseller - ask for both authorized and unauthorized.

as far as i know, applecare covers your apple product, regardless of where it was purchased.

For the record

you don't have to wait until the "day of" the supposed WWDC update announcements to purchase.

In fact, according to apple, you could've placed a MBP 10 days ago; if it gets updated, they'll delay your order and ship out the newer model. If you miss the 'cut off" you can simply hold onto the machine, wait until there are any annoucements, than return it or open.

I'm tired hearing these erroneous "wait until Aug 8" recommendations. Certainly, you can buy now, then get an upgraded version courtesy of Apple if the MBP sees Merom.

THE LOWDOWN
Basically I have found that you may purchase an Apple trademarked item from anywhere you want to. If it has an Apple Logo it has a warranty by law. Any Apple Hardware that is covered by the one year limited warranty is still covered by the one year warranty, despite it's place of purchase.

SO WHAT IF I DECIDE TO SHOP WITH AN UNAUTHORIZED MAC DEALER?
The only problems one may face, are how trustworthy the reseller may be,
(some resellers might try to pass off a refurbished mac as new) (some might pass off an opened box as new sealed) and quality of service and support.(they might ship later to the carrier instead of same day or day later, and have bad customer support, both phone and e-mail.) The Apple limited warranty will cover you from the purchase date. (keep receipt from the reseller for the length of the limited warranty

WHAT IS LIMITED WITHIN THE WARRANTY?
The limits within the warranty are related to accidental damage like fires or water damage. Also, customizing or upgraded parts from other sellers may void the warranty.

Does anyone know if B&H Photo is known for any fraudulent activities?

Club Mac is actually authorized and has slightly different pricing after rebate.

$1944 $1844 after rebate
MBP 2Ghz
80gig Hd
128Mb Radeon X1600
4X Superdrive
512 Mb Ram

The strange thing is......

I e-mailed them yesterday asking them, can you guys guarantee that your Macs
are not refurbished. (the serial # check) You guys are not authorized Mac dealers right?

Their website is down today and I have yet to recieve an e-mail that is usually responded to within 24 hours.
