Buying my first (i)Mac

Hey,

I'm considering buying an iMac (Which would be my first Mac) soon, and I have a few questions I'd like to have answers to before buying one. I plan buying the new Quad Core 27" iMac, in case it matters when answering my questions.

Is it possible/recommended to add non-Apple RAM to the iMac? Are there any disadvantages to this? What are they?

Is the new Magic Mouse capable of middle clicking in any way?

Is there a wired version of the Magic Mouse? I'm not a big fan on Wireless keyboards and mouses, as they run on batteries.

I've read somewhere that to right click in Magic Mouse you have to raise your left click finger, is that true? It may seem like it is according to the video in Apple's website. (The demonstrator raises his finger before he right clicks.)

How good are the built-in speakers compared to external ones?

In case I have more questions, I'll ask them here.

You can use non-Apple ram. It tends to be cheaper. Check out Crucial, Kingston or one of these threads. The only warning I have, is if you have to send your computer in for Apple to repair, remove third-party ram. They are notorious for stealing your third party ram.

Since a mouse is, for most people, the thing you touch most on a computer, make sure you have one that you like. IMNSHO, just about anything from Logitech or Razer is vastly more comfortable and usable than the apple mouse (though I hope to be proved wrong by the new Mighty Danger Mouse). For After-market Mac RAM, I always go with OWC, but that's just personal preference.

1. Non-Apple RAM is cheaper but you have to put it in yourself and will not be covered by Apple under your warranty (although it should be covered by the manufacturer).

2. I don't think it will do a middle click.

3. Only wireless. The former Mighty Mouse (now Apple mouse) is still available wired.

4. I don't believe the new mouse requires lifting your left finger to get a right click. A corner is designated when you turn on this feature. This is not true of the former mouse which is why many people have gotten into the habit. Try one before you decide.

5. The speakers won't make you throw out your stereo but they are good enough that I stopped using my stereo radio while working and listen to my iTunes collection on my iMac instead. Again, try one (although stores can be noisy). Best wishes.

I wish I could try the new mouse, but the new Apple hardware still hasn't arrived here, and I plan shipping my future Mac from overseas. (The local Apple reseller is a lot more expensive than the prices stated on Apple.com)

Does installing 3rd party RAM voids my warranty or it's simply not covered by Apple's warranty?

Even if you dont liek the mouse, get it anyway and sell it on ebay and buy a corded one.

First off, I've loved my Mac purchases ever since I finally bit the bullet and jumped on board about 3 years ago (right after buying my first iPhone). I still can't imagine going back to shoddily constructed winblows machines ever again.

To your point though on the keyboard and mouse...

You can actually get a wired keyboard (my preference is the wired one with the side number keys) if you don't like wireless with batteries....and a Mac will run with any mouse at all if you have a favorite, just plug it in and it works. I personally never took the time to even bother getting used to the Mac mighty mouse and have instead continued using my old "PC" mouse instead. I am, however, curious about what this new Apple mouse feels like and how it operates and would like to try it out.
