I found a desk at the IKEA website, but I've never bought anything from them before. Does anyone have experience buying from IKEA online? I've avoided other sellers like Target.com because of woeful stories about missing and damaged parts, bad manufacturing, etc.

IKEA stuff are actually pretty decent quality, although I'd avoid buying online and get it in person. Their delivery charges are by no means cheap.

store is good...ordering online i read that its bad...

just google reviews...

You're going to be spending a whole lot of time at that desk.

I'd at least go look at the floor models to see how well they are constructed.

You'll be building yours from kit, so you better know what you're getting into.

Yea, I was going to buy some shelves from them online but the shipping cost was almost twice the cost of the shelves.

I was fairly impressed by my roommate's desk, which is very similar to the ones I'm looking at.

Maybe picking it up in person is the better option.

I personally HATE ikea with a passion. In fact along with starbucks and Kinkos, its one of my mosted hated brands. I could tell you long detailed stories of horrible experiences, and their completely ignorant excuse for customer service. But hate fits everything pretty good. Never bought online, but just given the shipping charges, if you can pick it up locally i'd recommend it. THeir online catalog and web and phone ordering is only 1/3 of what they offer in store.

I take it you're also a fan of Fight Club? :)

Do you have any other suggestions for where to buy my desk? I liked IKEA because of the reasonable prices and "convenience."

actually that is my favorite movie. but i'm not entirely against comsumerism. Everyone knows everyone has to make money, i just hate brands that make things harder than they need to be when its so easy to make it easy. I don't hate them cost they represent consummerism, but because my expereinces there sucked. Consistantly

i don't know what you're budget is but there here is something comprable in price to ikea ,apart from target.

plummers.com

and a little more.

westelm.com

What are your feelings about Wal-Mart?

I like Ikea's products, but hate going to the store. If you have one near by and don't mind spending some time putting the desk together, then it is a good bet.

I bought my desk from Ikea:
http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stor...tId=58514&langId=-1&chosenPartNumber=10103682

In the store there is an option for a sliding extension that mounts perpendicular to the end without the drawers. I have my laptop on that extension, giving me the entire desk for a work area (junk area as of now).

FWIW, I find Plummers a bit more expensive than IKEA (10-20%) and the quality is good though I hate the hardware hardware they use to put things together. [Prefer IKEA]. (Typed on the Plummers desk my iMac sits on).

Assembling things is fun. :) You should know what you're getting into when you get an IKEA product... if you hate putting things together, well, too bad?

I bought a JERKER desk from them last year (very sturdy, for the most part). Ended up driving to the nearest store (Emeryville, 60 miles away) because shipping would have been in the hundreds!

p.s. Fight Club is awesome.

Ikea Canada's online ordering system is a little flawed, in my opinion. You choose what you would like to order, enter your credit card information, and then someone is supposed to call you within 72 hours to talk about shipping and finalize the order.

It took eight days for them to call, and by then I had gone to a store and bought it there.

Ikea and Target are great stores.

You really need to go to the store though. As others have said the shipping rates are outrageous!!

Another added bonus of going to the IKEA store is their scratch & dent section. My computer desk came from that section (floor model..nothing worng with it...just assembled) and I recieved 60% off the already cheap IKEA price. Now I have a sheek ultra modern (or retro, whichever you want to call it) desk!
