Buying RAM

I'm going to buy the new high-end 20in. iMac. But the price for the Apple RAM is just...meh. Add 165$ for an extra Go, and add 935 for 3 extra go. C'mon, that's rediculous. Is there some kind of "third party" RAM that fits into the iMac and that cost much less ?

I'm not sure if the new iMacs are dual-channel but if not then you can always buy 1GB stick for around 50$...

The new iMac and the old ones use DDR2 PC2-5300 so.. (also it's a 200 pin SODIMM)

Looking to purchase the new 24" iMac and upgrade the RAM to 4GB am I correct in assuming I need to buy 2 x 2GB SO-DIMM 200 Pin DDR2 667 (PCS 5300) memory?

Just want to make sure before I order...

I am wondering this also. Just ordered 24" with 1 gb ram b/c it can be had cheaper at newegg. Would like to leave the 1gb stick in and go with a crucial or muskin 2 gb stick. Also does anyone know if all ram will work fine or do you need to go to the "Mac" section and get mac ram at newegg.

I highly recommend buying from a place that guarantees compatibility with your Mac. I bought memory from NewEgg for my PowerBook and returned 3 sets because they were causing kernel panics. NewEgg was great about returning the memory, but I finally just bought some from Data Memory Systems (http://www.datamem.com) and it worked perfectly.

I'm not sure if Intel Macs are as picky about the memory they use as PPC Macs, but its better to be safe, and datamem has very reasonable prices.

Well I don't know about Newegg or Corsair but I know that Crucial has a "Scan My System" option...

Also, you don't have to install in kits or pairs if the computer can't take advantage of dual-channel memory. If it could, then you'll gain some improvement by installing in kits.
