with all the complaints and returns of hot and whinning MBP's is buying a refurbished one just asking for trouble?

from what i have read here on the forums, apple inspects all of the returned MBP and make sure all the issues are fixed b4 they sell as refurb. so they "should" be fixed. they are still covered under the same warranty so even if you do encounter a prob, they should/will take care of it.

Yeah, I was wondering about that as well. Do you think the refurb 15" is a better buy than a Black macbook? Its just $100 more expensive, but then it doesnt seem to be a lot of difference between the two 'books

Many of us are drawn to the MacBook because it is new, but I think the refurb MBP is a better buy. The ExpressCard slot, illuminated keyboard, thinner profile, and larger screen make it a better value in my opinion. Despite this, I'd rather have a MB, just as a change of pace from my 15" PB.

i second that :)

What are you expecting, a notebook held together with duct tape and chewing gum? Refurb means that while it might have had a manufacturing defect, they went through it and fixed everything they could find until its in perfect working order. It might even have a brand new logic board.

Frankly, I would say you're less likely to find bugs than in a new Mac. Refurbs are Apple's special deals for exceptional people like us who are just as deserving but would still like a good value. My last two 'books were refurbs and my next one will be too.

where do you buy refurbished mbp?
are they online at apple.com

Is there only special times when a MBP is up for grabs

The apple site has a 15.4 listed at 1.83GHz. I thought they were supposed to be 2.0GHz.

Whats up with that?

[Apple Certified Refurbished MacBook Pro
Refurbished MacBook Pro - 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo
15.4-inch TFT display with 1440x900 resolution
1.83GHz Intel Core Duo with 2MB shared L2 Cache
667MHz frontside bus
512MB (single SO-DIMM) 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
80GB 5400rpm Serial ATA hard drive]

The MacBook Pro was originally supposed to be at 1.66/1.83 GHz. Apple then bumped them to 1.83/2.0 GHz before they shipped. And TODAY we have 2.0/2.16 GHz on the 15.4" models. The refubished model is the old low end 1.83 GHz one.

The first generation of Macbook Pros had a 1.83GHz processor. When the MacBook (non-pro) came out, the 1.83GHZ were relegated to those computers, where the current generation of Macbook Pros had their lowest processor bumped to 2.0GHz.

hmmm. maybe theyll start selling the refurbished 2.0's soon :/

They already do.

yea, i guess i meant with 512MB of ram instead of 1GB. since that would be a little cheaper.

to bad I cant use my student discount on refurbished.

While your student discount will not make the MBP less expensive, it will make AppleCare less expensive. Log into the refurbished section through the student store to see the savings.
