So granted this sounds like a no-brainer - I know that purchasing insurance after the fact is dishonest, but hypothetically speaking:

Suppose you purchased an iPad back in April, and recently discovered an ~1cm scratch on the display. Suppose you tried a genius bar appt. to no avail.

What's to stop you from purchasing Squaretrade With ADH protection and then filing a claim? It seems like they must have a way of protecting themselves as a company from this... But I can't find anything in their terms.

Or if anyone has other suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I've considered calling AppleCare to try my luck with them, but my phone support is expired so I'd either have to purchase AppleCare or pay their per-incident fee for phone support.

Let me put it this way:

Has anyone had luck getting an iPad replaced due to a scratch while still under manufacturer's warranty?

Is it worth trying Apple phone support (mine is expired)? How does their per-incident fee work if they decide not to offer a replacement?

Edit: Nevermind - probably not an issue.. I just discovered multiple pieces of dust under the screen. Will it matter that there's also a small scratch or will Apple be willing to replace it anyway due to the dust under screen?

IMHO (Having worked for a wholesaler dealing daily with warranties) unless the scratch and dust are related - e.g. the scratch is indicative of rough handling that would compromise the seal leading to dust contamination - then they cannot refuse to honour their warranty policy. You should, however, be prepared to receive a reconditioned unit or have your unit reconditioned instead of replaced - this is done at the discretion of the manufacturer or their represenative.

You have to buy the squaretrade warranty within 30 days of buying the iPad, so moot point.
