I'm going to be buying two iPhone 8s for my kids. I've been searching for discounts but I don't think I'm going to find anything worthwhile. I see AT&T has a buy one get one free promotion for people that sign up for NEXT. I don't want to go that route. Info for those that don't know about it is -

  • Purchase on AT&T's monthly payment plan
  • Credit will be given on monthly bill
  • Second iPhone can be iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X, XR, XS or XS Max
  • Must have DIRECTV
My kid's phones are on their Mom's AT&T account. I just want to buy them outright then wrap them up. This won't be a cheap Christmas so I'm looking to save money if I can. Anyone know of deals that I'm not seeing?

Thanks!

You currently have AT&T? Call up and ask for retentions. They should offer you $450 off any phone, as long as you pay for it all up front, and commit to keeping it for 2 years.

ATT’s loyalty department will sale you the iPhone XR for $299 with a 2 year agreement, must be on a unlimited plan though !!!

Walmart Black Friday. $400 gift card per phone activated on carrier. Think that was on the 8 as well.

Other than the "must have directv" part - why is that deal so bad? I assume you will stay with the carrier for 2 years... or not?

Really.. tell me more about this. What if we are in the middle of the next plan? Pay it off, or will they take it in trade?

Can't help you there. I have two paid-off devices.

I believe the retention special has nothing to do with Next. You'll probably have to pay off the remaining balance of your device in order to get the loyalty discount.

Really? I'll have to call them today. I was originally going to be purchasing two iPhone 8s but after doing some research last night, I think I'll be going with the 128GB XRs instead. My kid's current phones are on their Mom's account. They were hand me down phones that were added to the plan so those could be taken off and two new lines set up. The 2 year agreement is fine. Not like they will be going anywhere.

Yes I just did this yesterday, just make sure you’re on a unlimited plan.ask for the 2 year commitment deal if they don’t mention it

I think it depends who you talk to. I spoke with someone in retentions. She gave me the regular price for purchase and of course she was pushing installment prices of $25 or so per month. I've heard of discounts like you mention. Maybe it's a roll of the dice. I noted that the phones would be added on and I was looking to see if there are any discounts available for a 2 year commitment.

It may depend on how long you’ve been a customer too.

But I would for sure try again.

I've been with them since it was Cingular years ago. Same with my ex. The kid's phones on her account. It would probably be the same either way. I'll give them another call when I have time while in the car.
[doublepost=1542134196][/doublepost]I Googled AT&T $450 discount. Found a lot of negative stuff/warnings. Some things about the access fee being increased by $20 per month which offsets the discount. Here is one of the threads - https://forums.att.com/t5/Wireless-Account/The-ATT-Loyalty-scam/td-p/5584621

You can get the 8+ refurb from Apple for 599 each. They are in and out of stock due to how popular they are though. I bought one last week and am returning it soon. There was a large smudge on the underside of the glass that I couldnt clean off.

I would try again different reps get different results. The only thing you need is a unlimited plan with a $40 month access fee already.

Verizon used to charge $40 access when on 2 year contract vs. $20 off contract.. If you figure it out, after 24 months you pay $480 more in access fees which to me cancels out any savings your getting on cost of the phone.
