Hello there,

I am about to put an order in with OWC to purchase some upgrades for my quad-core Mac Pro 4.1.

8GB RAM
1TB WD Caviar Black
5870 Ati Radeon

Basically if I buy the 5870 with the HD and RAM, I save about NZD$200 as opposed to if I got the 5870 through the Apple New Zealand store.

My question is will I get spiked in customs with my order? Also in the event of failure, will I be able to get support in New Zealand for the 5870 with Apple?

Thanks heaps for any responses!

Hey Nermal,

Thanks for the response. Have you ever had to pay GST on anything excess $400? Also any idea on how they decide whether to charge or not?

Why don't you just buy locally from PBTech or somewhere? NZ has great prices if you consider the exchange rate.

As far as I can tell from their website (and talking to them instore today actually) they dont stock the Apple 5870.

Also I am not sure what RAM I would purchase to be compatible with my mac pro. OWC makes it easy to show what RAM you need to buy for your comp.

Officially they charge on anything over $400 but I've heard of cases when they haven't. I've had to pay GST twice; once on an iBook and again on a phone.

Oh ok thanks for that. Without the 5870, my order comes to about NZ$383 with just the ram and HD.

I haven't bought anything from OWC before, but if they're like any other normal place, they would have a Customs Declaration form on the box (a few copies in fact), which would list the contents of the package and the sales price.

Assuming New Zealand Customs is the same as Australia, the officers will do the conversions to NZD based on the rates on that day.

Oh right ok. So do those rates apply for the day I order it, or the day it arrives in customs? Which say I ordered today, could be after the 6th of Feb.

You should be able to use any DDR3 ECC RAM over 1066mhz.

Any of these cards will work with your Mac if you flash the ROM to add EFI booting, which is a lot easier than it sounds.
