I found someone who offered a great deal on 64g IPP 10.5. Saying it's 1 week old but he lost the receipt and need cash. Sounds weird to me because I am sure you can go back to the store and they will pull your receipt based on the barcode/serial#. He provided me with the serial and I ran it through the Apple website. My question however is if there is a way to know if it's refurbished? or anything else? He offers for $495 (which is really 450+ tax) so good deal. Thoughts?

sounds dodgy to me. Within the return period too they could get a 100% refund from apple.

My thoughts are if something doesn't seem right, it likely isn't. If you have the serial number, Apple should be able to verify if it's a refurbished device from their stock. If you do plan on purchasing this iPad, I would fully test it to make sure it's functional and physically looks acceptable.

Also, I would meet at an Apple Store if applicable, that way if you have any questions pertaining to the device at that time, they could be addressed right there in the store.

Maybe it was purchased with a stolen credit card? That is a really good price. If it’s a local sale check it out and make sure it functions properly and the most important thing is make sure there isn’t an Apple ID signed in.

One slight possibility is, if you lose the receipt some stores only take it back as store credit. So if he wants the cash, this may be one explanation. That said, another warning sign is if there is no box.

I would follow the advice in the thread, however.

Another thing, even if you lose the receipt today, almost all retailers can physically look up the transaction and it still accept the return without a receipt, that is if it's in the return period and Assuming it was paid with a debit or credit card, which most consumers will use with a high dollar iPad. Personally, it baffles me how someone can "Lose" the receipt in less than a week for such an expensive item.

True, although it depends on the store. Some of them are kind of a pain about it. Also, if it was a hot iPad I would use the "it was a gift. I need the money more than I need an iPad" line.

In terms of losing the receipt, I've done stupid stuff like this. I once thought I misplaced a large check from an expense report.

I know some are complacent when it comes to certain things, perhaps I am just more mindful of keeping track of receipts for larger priced items. But everyone makes mistakes.
