Buying used MBP from eBay with 3-year AppleCare - Can I extend AppleCare to the yearly option after the 3-year plan expires?

Hi all

Question is in the title really - I've found a used MBP on eBay that still has a year or so left on its 3-year AppleCare plan. Once the 3-year plan expires, do I get the option of extending it to the yearly applecare plan? One of my old iPhone did this, so I was wondering if it was possible with MacBook Pros too?
