I am unable to open c/raw files taken with canon r7 camera. Photos app /preview not opening them. Is there some other software needed. 2012 MacBook Pro Catalina.

A quick search found people saying they wouldn't open on Catalina, but would on Big Sur and Monterey. I can tell you first hand CR3 files open just fine on Sonoma, but I'm assuming you're likely stuck on an older OS.

You should have access to Canon's DPP software. I used to use it before getting the Abobe Photography Plan (LightRoom and Photoshop subscription). Here's a link to grab it: https://www.canon-europe.com/suppor...ctid=tcm:13-2203436&os=macOS 10.15 (Catalina)

Thanks for the link, will look into it. I imagine I could convert them to jpeg ,but would be better in craw for processing.

How new is the camera? Generally macos will only open non dng raw files from cameras since before it was released

Catalina is too old to support the R7. Even in newer OSes Preview is an extremely limited tool for raw files, and Photos isn’t a lot better. You can try Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software, which is free and available from Canon’s website, but Catalina doesn’t support the latest version of that either so you still may have some issues.
