Do the new mac book pros still have the horizontal line issue that plagued the original mbps? This is an issue of great concern to me...

No, no horizontal lines. Just grainy displays and uneven backlighting. Although...I must say. It seems not ALL models are affected but I have yet to see one without this issue.

Go check em´out if you get the chance.

:( So, crap... If I order it and get the service plan can I get it repaired when they resolve the problem? I need the computer in less than a month.

Well according to Apple its all within spec so I wouldnt hold my breath for a fix anyday soon, I just returned my 2nd MBP. But go to a store and check em out, you might not have a problem with it.

I'm almost prepared to just cough up the extra 300 to get the 17 because, from all the reports that I've read, it's mostly problem free. Do you mostly concur with that?

Yeah, I was thinking of doing the same but going from the low end model 15 to a stock 17 is still a lot of money for me, just to get a functional laptop. Thats crap so I wont do it. It doesnt feel right. I havent decide yet though.

I would never pay more to get a basic feature like a good quality screen. It's not as though the 15" is cheap! Also, the 17" is a beast, albeit compares favorably to other 17" PC laptops in terms of size and weight. The 15" is the perfect compromise between power, portability and comfort.

I'm miffed that I still can't get a MBP that is the equal to what my old powerbook G4 15" 1.67. The more I think about it, the more happy I am that I returned the MBP since I know I would have always been annoyed with the display.

Maybe Apple will address this in the near future. remember that it's hard to just discontinue a LCD since there are contracts with suppliers and it isn't easy to find a new supplier over night that can fill huge orders. This will only happen over time.
