C2D Macbook + Windows Vista results

Hey everyone,

Just picked up a 2GHz C2D MB to replace my somewhat old IBM T40 (1.7GHz P4M, Win XP Pro). Really psyched to be back on a Mac after ~15years or so!! Back then, when my high school got it's first Mac + Apple LaserPrinter, I was so in awe with all the possiblities... imagination running wild, I took full advantage of the avant garde technology to produce my ... first fake ID!! I don't think I've ever produced anything more compelling on a PC since!!

Anyway, back to the topic-- while waiting for some MB upgrades to arrive (2GB + 100 GB 7200RPM drive), I decided to try out Vista via Bootcamp. Results:

1. Vista Ultimate takes approx 8.5GB, and loaded fine, BUT I'm having problems loading the Bootcamp drivers CD-ROM. Anyone have luck with this?

2. The D-Link driver worked, so this thing appears to have a pre-N wireless card in it!

3. The Aero Glass interface, including Flip 3D seem to work fine with the 1GB of memory. No real performance issues, but I don't plan on installing any games.

4. I'm attaching a screenshot of the "Windows Experience Index Base Score" on my MB. Remember, this is for a 2GHz C2D MB, with 1GB RAM, 80GB drive. These may go up a little when I install the add'l RAM and faster HDD.

Man that picture looks like Windows either doesn't know how to average those 5 numbers or doesn't want to average them for some stupid reason. Nice reasonable scores though but that MB doesn't deserve a 3.

Huh? You're expecting it to average when it clearly says "determined by lowest subscore"?

I assume the highest number would be 5.0, considering the 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo scored a 4.9, and it's one of the fastest processors out there.

Just for the record, my desktop computer scored a 1.0 due to my ol', but faithful, Radeon 9250

edit: i scored a 5.2 on data transfer rate.

I'm not sure that there is one - current high-end systems would probably get about 5 or 6, but in a few years it might be up to 15-20.

How can that be on a C2D MBP? The C2D come standard with at LEAST 2.16GHz and a 120GB hard drive. I think you're running a "core duo" MBP.

Meh. First off you are running 1GB. That alone it reason enough. When Vista ships to get any of the bells and whistles you will need at minimum 1GB. Sweet spot is going to be 2GB. Then there is the GPU. 64MB I'm assuming using that shared mem architecture crap. Its amazing you got the score you did on graphics. I would almost expect a 2 on that.
As for BootCamp and drivers. Apple, at this time, isn’t focusing on Vista, nor is anyone else for that matter, If you are going to get drivers for Vista you are going to have to do it on your own. Check out http://www.onmac.net/ and browse the forums and the wiki. There are some good resources on the site with tips, tricks, and links to drivers.
Me? I just about pulled out all my hair trying to make heads or tails of their retarded networking setup. The last build I installed was the fastest I’ve ever installed\uninstalled an OS ever. XP is the sweet spot right now. It’s a mature OS with full hardware and software developer support and as long as you have a firewall, AV program, and a good browser you should be fine.

You have to manually extract the BootCamp drivers and install them.

The BootCamp CD is not compatible with Vista.

I assume it's one of the public previews. Although Vista is finished (RTM), it's not on MSDN yet so very few people actually have it.

Pressure, SiliconAddict -- Thanks for the BootCamp tip + link... I got most of the stuff to work, except I the mouse... I'll tinker with it later.

I don't understand some of the posts re: low score. The overall low score is weighted toward the graphics performance. However, if you don't play games, I'm assuming it's still fine-- ALL the visuals in Vista seem to be working. Or maybe people just like higher numbers??
