C2D MB fan oscillation/whine/something at ~2600-2650 rpm

My C2D MacBook emits a faint but fairly obnoxious fan whine when it runs at a bit above 2600 rpm. If the fan slows or accelerates, the whine vanishes. Are my ears supersensitive or am I unlucky? I shouldn't complain really because my old HP Omnibook ran with quite a noisy harddrive and this is very faint compared to.
