Just wanted to say that I have a 2.16 C2D Mac Book Pro that whines. But, it whines only when Magsafe is plugged in (absolutely nothing on batteries) and the whine is very faint - but it-s there, although you really have to look for it to hear it... I guess they have simply toned it down to an almost inaudible level, but I guess they need a complete redesign to get rid of it completely...

I have heard of no others complaining and I have a 2.33 Ghz C2D and I am not whining...I mean my MBP that is. My MBP is totally silent. Perhaps you need a replacement if it bothers you.

I had this problem with my CD macbook. I owned the macbook for probably a month before it started, and I was about to call Applecare when I turned it on and it was gone..... it has come back once since, but only for a minute. It was really strange.

I had really been working the harddrive since I got it though. I never turned it off or put it to sleep, I was constantly downloading, and it was usually plugged in. Now that I let it sleep, it doesn't make the noise... (maybe its way of saying thanks??)

I also had a whine on my C2D MBP.

Mine was not associated with the magsafe, but with the LCD screen. Whenever it came to life after a sleep, if it was more than 2/3rd bright it produced a very audible and annoying high pitched note that lasted for...about 2 minutes.

Whine? Don't you just mean the sound of a fan running?
The fans run more often now than on the first rev mbps and mbs,
but at a low speed, to keep the system from getting so hot they need to run fast.
No laptop is completly quiet unless it doesnt have any fans running, people should stop being so sensitive.

Mine's absolutely quiet - if you have a "whine," you should get it repaired/replaced.

I think in many cases the whine-issues are just people with "too good" hearing. I.e. they've heard some have problems with it so they listen carefully and notice the low sound of a fan and instantly think its a problem.

I think all Macbooks have this whine, some people just can't hear it because it is so quiet and so high pitched. It is a lot quieter than the original whine, which i had with my returned MBP, but it is noticeable if you listen hard enough.

I agree.
I had the whine on the original Macbook I bought. Most people didn't even notice it on the Macbook.
When C2D MBP's were released, I returned the MB for the MBP.
The whine is MUCH better, but still there just a bit when plugged in.
The difference between this one and the Macbook is that, although I know the whine is there, it doesn't bug me at all.
Just not loud enough. :)

The same EXACT thing happened with my CD MBP. It was dead silent on battery power, but when you plug it in, the whine kicks in. The worst part is you can definitely hear it if you are in a quiet room. I'd suggest taking it back as you are still within your 14 day return period. I can't believe they haven't taken care of this issue in the new revisions of the MBP.

thew whine is there - believe me, I previously had a 1.83 CD MBP that went through no less than 4 logic boards because of the whine so I am a whinologist by now :D
I am actually in touch with Apple over the issue - they will send me a new power brick for starters, but a replacement is on the table...
Glad to see that many have no whine at all, makes me hopeful for a total fix. Mine whines for sure tough...

Yeah I agree. I've had two MB's (one original and one C2D that I'm using now) and tried a C2D MBP and they all have a high pitch whine on A/C. I'm 23 and don't know if I have great ears or something, but I've gone to Apple stores multiple times and everyone I've examined does it.

By the way, this is much different than the CD MBP whine off battery that was pretty audible and also much lower pitched.

You'll ignore it soon enough - I consider it a good tradeoff for the quiet hard drive and fans that the Macbooks have as opposed to other manufacturers.

I disagree, i examined mine thoroughly because i was one of thos that skipped the first revision due to whine problems. So the first thing i did was carried out a thorough examination. Does it whine not in my ears, it was quieter than my PB.

Maybe the whine *is* there at some level BUT i can't hear it and i'd like to think i have pretty good ears

It is there, but I listened closely and I can't figure out if it is a whine or just the fan spinning at its "idling" speed.

Either way it doesn't bother me as much as the screen, so I just ignore it

Mine is silent, except when im using processor intensive task like playing a game or rendering audio/video it makes a very faint whinning noise. That noticeble but not really a nuisance unless you concentrate on it. Is that normal?

"Police have given their backing to a gadget that sends out an ultra high-pitched noise that can be heard only by those under 20 and is so distressing it forces them to clutch their ears in discomfort."
