C2D MBP 2.16ghz + 23" ACD = grainy bluriness!?!?

The other day I was browsing around my local Best Buy's mac section, when I came across a C2D MBP with a 23 inch ACD mirroring the MBP's display. What I saw was an extremely blurred and grainy picture in the 23", so I checked the display preferences to be sure that it was set to 1920x1200. Sure enough, it was.

I was contemplating a 23" purchase to use with my C2D MBP for my photoshop and illustrator work, but after seeing that I'm really skeptical of the display quality. Was that setup just a bad apple (no pun intended), or are you other C2D MBP owners with 128mb gfx having this same issue?

Is it possible to be at 1920X1200 if it is mirroring? I thought mirroring would mean it ran at MBP's resolution.

It is physically impossible to run both of the displays at 1920x1200 at the same time. The image from the laptop will have been upscaled to 1920x1200 (hence giving the loss in quality) to go to the ACD.

Those screens are not any worse than most LCDs (infact IMO much better) so it was probably just the fact that it was upscaled. If you go back try to turn off mirroring in the display prefs and see how it looks then when you drag stuff into the ACD.

Not impossible. Just use the 15.4" WUXGA screen upgrade method we've talked about for almost a year now :]

The reason to the 'grainyness' of 15" displays is the use of WXGA+ screens as well as the fine-dot pitch combined with the screen finish, which give it the higher-than-normal 1440 x 900 resolution.

Look at other laptops with 15.4" screens. They're just usually WXGA.
