A friend of mine just got a C2D MacBook Pro two days ago and now it wont shut down. The Finder bar, dock, and wallpaper all disappear as usual, but it hangs at the blue screen with the spinning animation thingy. After about 15 seconds, the animation stops and it just stays there. I was thinking of doing a test shutdown from my protege and run the disk utility diagnostics, am I on the right track?

I'm not an expert, but I usually test the same problem in a different user account. It at least narrows it down to a something wrong with the User home directory and the OS as a whole.

I found out what was wrong. My friend basically moved the his entire Mail folder and prefrences from his iBook to the MBP. I deleted the files on the MBP and used the quickpicks in Backup to port the files in. The creating a new user account thing helped a lot, thanks adrianblaine.
