I have a 2009 iMac and just purchased a brand new iMac. What cable do I need to transfer information from the old one to the new one in target disk mode, or whatever way is best, since the old one does not have any thunderbolt connections? Thank you.

It only supports Firewire Target disk mode.

I was under the impression you can transfer data via your Ethernet network supposedly but it wouldn't work for me. But you can connect via a simple Ethernet cable which should work. (I didn't try it though.)

What I did is backed up the 2009 to an external USB drive, and then did a transfer to the new machine from the external drive.

Thank you. They always make it sound so easy until you try to actually do it. I have a backup USB external hard drive with everything on it that I will use. Thanks for your help.
