Hi,

My Calendar app is exhibiting some strange behaviour lately. I normally keep it open and hidden but after a few minutes it quits without any input from me. The amount of time it takes before it quits is usually anything between 2 and 10 minutes.

Is anybody else experiencing this or know why it might be happening?

I'm on Big Sur 11.2.1

Thanks!

Have you tried starting in safe mode (hold SHIFT on startup)?

If you have: Did the problem still exist?

Sorry, I struggle to make sense of your question... I'd like all my apps to quit when I tell them to and stay open unless I do so.

You asked help, so i'm trying to help.
If you want to solve your problem,
please start with safe mode and tell me if the problem still exists.

Do you mean if the problem persist while I'm in safe mode or do you mean start up in safe mode and then startup normally again and check if it persists?

I'm using the computer for work right now so I can't try it until later. But let's say the problem persists (or doesnt') in safe mode. What would that indicate? Thanks

Do you get a message like:

"Calendar app crashed" or "Calendar app has quit unexpectedly"

Try resetting the SMC when you are done with work:

Choose Apple menu > Shut Down and wait for your Mac to shut down.

Press Shift-Control-Option on the left side of the built-in keyboard, then press the power button at the same time. Hold these keys and the power button for 10 seconds. If you have a MacBook Pro with Touch ID, the Touch ID button is also the power button.

Release all keys.

Press the power button again to turn on your Mac.

Or reset the PRAM/NVRAM:

Shut down your Mac.

Then turn it on and immediately press and hold these four keys together: Option, Command, P, and R.

You can release the keys after about 20 seconds, during which your Mac might appear to restart.

You can release the keys after the Apple logo appears and disappears for the second time, or after 20 seconds. Whichever comes first.

So I'm experiencing the same phenomenon.

I'm on Big Sur 11.2.3. The Calendar app works just fine and had no problems with windows minimized to the dock or hidden (cmd-H).

However, if I close the calendar window with the red close bubble in the upper left corner, after a minute or so, the calendar app with self-quit. No crash dialog is reported. No calendar.app errors are generated in the Console app.

I have 4 or 5 iCloud calendars and three subscribed calendars. Strong working internet connection.

It's like the Calendar app in Big Sur is designed to quit after a minute or so once the last window is closed. Now it's been some time (over a year) since I've used macOS as a desktop OS, but the Calendar app did not behave this way on versions prior to 10.14 for sure.

Anyone else see this or feels like giving it a try?

Follow up:

So I'm not certain that the Calendar app is actually quitting by itself. While the active app dot underneath the app icon on the dock does disappear, the app still appears on Activity Viewer's process list. Also, clicking on the calendar icon immediately brings back up the calendar, unlike when it's manually quit and re-launched where it needs a bounce or two before its up and running.

No idea why the active app indicator dot disappears from the dock for this one app, however.

It's not quite the same problem. I tried what you are describing and my calendar app works the same way when i close the window with the red bubble. For some reason this doesn't feel like a bug. My problem was the app was quitting after being hidden with cmd-H.

Any succes?
Actually I never had time to try your suggestions. The laptop was damaged in an accident. I restored a backup from the old one to a new Macbook Air and it seems like I'm not experiencing this problem currently. I'll see what happens when the old one is back from repair and I switch back to it.

Perhaps in the mean time you wouldn't mind explaining the reasoning behind your suggestions? You suggested safe mode and resetting SMC and PRAM/VRAM. Are these general suggestions to try for just about any problem or was there something specific regarding the Calendar app that you thought could be helped by resetting or safe mode?

I'm having the same issue. After reading this, maybe it's not really quitting, it's just the dot disappears of a while of being hidden. I frequently cmd-opt-h to hide all the other apps, and i've noticed lately that dot disappears for Calendar. But as someone mentioned, when I click it, it opens very quickly, like maybe it was still running. I'm on Big Sur 10.5.1 on a MacBook Air. I'll try some of the suggestions here. Thanks.

In my case I know for sure that Calendar is really quitting. I have my dock set to only show running apps and so the Calendar icon is disappearing completely, not just the black dot.

I’ve tried just about everything and am still experiencing this problem.

Had the same problems yesterday. Deleted all ical related in the Preference and application support directories in the local usr library. This did the trick, but all my calendars are iCloud shared!! Therefore I had backup on the server!
(Tried everything described before and installed the newest Big Sur update but no success.)

Now I need a solution to fix the MS Teams problem (We're sorry—we've run into an issue.) we have on some macs (M1 and Intel, Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur) since June or so. Couldn't find one working solution, removed even all Microsoft related Programms and cleaned all Libraries but no success.
