Calendar event dots

is anyone else experiencing issues with their calendar event dots showing up inconsistently? Used to work fine but now sometimes the dots are there or not there if I have an event set for a day. It's important I be able to look at my calendar and see which days are free without having to click and go through each day.
Also this entire redundant holiday calendar thing is annoying. Ugh.

Ok weird, turning the phone into landscape mode sometimes fixes it temporarily???
