Calendar gone

Husbands calendar was never on iCloud backup. Turned it on today and selected Merge date. Now all the events that were on his phone prior our gone. I’ve clicked show all, turned off iCloud calendar, and turned back on. None of its coming back. What am I doing wrong?

P.S. His entire life is in his calendar….. I’m going to be divorced or murdered if I can’t get it back.

Been ages for me, but, maybe an "On my iPhone" category showing on the phone (Calendar > Calendars)? Those don't sync via iCloud iirc: would need to move the entries from phone to a cloud calendar.

Might want to also sign into iCloud.com via browser: are there calendar entries there? If not, can try to restore an old copy, to see if any there. The restore is under "Settings" in iCloud.com (your name at upper right > Settings).

Do you have a local backup ?

Btw "merge" should keep old data of the calendar
