Calendar Observation

In the newly posted activation video on apple.com, one thing that concerns me is a small detail about the calendar sync.

Notice that there is a choice to assign events created on the iPhone to a particular calendar.

This possibly implies that events can not be assigned a specific calendar or changed from one calendar to another on the iPhone itself, which is a drag.

I really wish they had demoed the Calendar app. It's potentially one of the more important uses of the phone, and no one has really seen how it looks or how it works.

Yeah, and what about to-dos? Will they come over? I'm preparing myself to be disappointed by the PIM functions on it. Fortunately, with web access, that can be overcome.

I was really hoping to see a demo of Calendar as well. Think the original plan was for it to work with iCal 3, or whatever it will be in Leopard, but the delay with Leopard means they may have to scale back the features of the iPhone. I'm sure we will see an iPhone software update with Leopard release and hopefully a lot more integration between applications on the computer and the iPhone.

I caught that as well. I hope that's not the case. It's one of the limitations of syncing my Treo with my Mac that I was hoping Apple would be able to easily overcome.

i would imagine this can be updated and changed with a firmwire update??

I know it's a hassle, it may actually be good to have all the iphone created events be on another calendar a) if you don't want to sync all calendars or b) you may want to double check those events created so to update them when on a computer. Even with 8 gigs, thats not a lot for all the other stuff you may want on it

I wonder if you can change that default on the iphone itself?

I would put money on the possibility of google making an online application that logs your to-do's using google calendar–making it available from any computer on the net, with no need to sync crap. Also, you can use google docs to do all sorts of other stuff.

I would expect iPhone optimized versions of these popular web apps coming very soon. Google employees are required to come up with something innovative every week, and the iPhone is still an untapped resource!

i use the missing sync software to sync my treo to my mac, and they offer this same option for calendar syncing as shown in the iphone video. but for my treo, this just sets to which calendar on my mac new appointments i created on my treo for which i did not designate a calendar will go.

example: i create a new appointment on my treo. i forget to set which calendar this appointment should be in, so it defaults to "Unfiled". when i sync my treo to my mac, my mac puts that appointment in my home calendar (since this is what i selected in the sync menu).

so, i don't think this is proof positive that appointments can't be added or edited on the iphone...
