I've attempted to use the Mac calendar app. I have an iMac, MacBook and iPhone. I just cannot get my head around it at all. Is there an alternative, that will sync on all 3? want to put appointments and events in & get a daily reminder, without having to remember to look at it.

Not sure if I'm misunderstanding your question, but I use the built in calendar app & use it with my iCloud account (on all 3 devices) and everything syncs up great. Calendars are stored in icloud, and synced to all three devices. I get alerts for any events that I set up an alert for. I have my preferences set so that I get an alert 15 minute before every new event. Sometimes when I create an event and I don't want a reminder, I turn off the default, but everything works great and syncs seamlessly.

This is easy to do. Just search for an app you like on MacOS then configure it as below.

Two ways ... third party app on your Mac that uses iCloud calendars (they mostly can), or third party app on your Mac that uses Google calendars, then configure your phone and ipad to use their stock calendar apps to talk to Google. The former is easier.

Many people here rave about Fantastical. I've never used it (not worth paying for the extras over stock apps for me), but it is feature rich.
