It seems California has approved the laws necessary to allow for a digital DL, but it looks like they are first going to roll it out slowly with a voluntary group of people not to exceed 0.5% of the population of drivers. That's disappointing as I had hoped it would be sooner than that for digital ID and DL cards.

Anyone here connected with the DMV and the California Legislature? If so, anyone have any idea how long it might be before we see some movement forward on the "pilot program"???

Not going to happen in my life time. I would put it there just for purchasing alcohol but when police is involved, I'm happy to just present physical ID.

You don't hand it to the officer. From my understanding, the officer will scan the code on the phone and that is all it takes.
You can also just keep your physical Drivers License in the glovebox with your insurance card if you don’t trust an officer to scan a barcode off your phone.

Seriously though, when has technology ever advanced on the user end and NOT also advanced on the other side? We’ve already done the paranoid dance with Apple Pay so I think its well established that Digital Cards are an OPTIONAL convenience. It’s cool for those who embrace tech, but if you want to use checkbooks, film cameras and secure landlines then you can still do that too.

You will NEVER have to hand your phone over to anyone. You can choose WHAT to transmit to the requester, so for instance at a bar, you can ONLY send your DOB and not have bartender see your physical address, or weight, or any other identifying information about you.

Data will be transmittable over a LOCKED device, so if someone DID see your phone, they can't access or see anything other than the content they asked for. Kind of like the way airline boarding passes work now.

Looking forward to handing my iPhone to a police officer
Who says you have to do that. Police can be equipped with a device that just scans your Digital ID and it shows on their equipment.

This logic is the same as saying “why would I hand my credit card to a restaurant person.”

Any updates on how California is moving towards this? I honestly can't wait I would love not to carry my ID. Ive gotten down to just my MagSafe wallet and 3 cards

Guaranteed you'll always be required to carry your physical ID/license. In Arizona it states right on the DMV website that the digital ID isn't a replacement for you physical ID card, your required to carry your physical card when you drive/travel. You won't be allowed to board the plane or you'll get hassled by the police if you get pulled over if for some reason and the digital ID can't be read so you need a backup

No matter what entity offers the ability to put their card in your phone wallet, at this time in history there is a certain minimum of cards I am always going to carry.

So you achieve card zero and it's all on your phone. When out for a walk and you get run over (by a hit and run driver no less) and your phone gets smashed into a million pieces - you're John/Jane Doe.

Not saying it will happen, but no one ever knows. In my area of the woods this morning two elderly people got killed by some maniac doing 100mph down a residential street.

I go for walks in the morning and I take my iPhone 6s+ for that. It doesn't have any of my Wallet stuff that's on my 11PM. Without my physical wallet in my pocket, no one would know who I was.

And most kids don’t have ids and walk to school. How does the world function when one is hit and killed?

Sometimes I go out without my phone and forget my wallet. I get what your saying things are moving forward if we like it or not. right now its take your ID just in case before you know it that will be a thing for old timers. I just like the advent of cash. how many people carry cash now a days? probably fewer than we think. Funny how peoples thinking changes over time. in the 80's-90's before cell phones were wide spread going anywhere without your phone wasn't even a concern. Now God forbid if we miss a call now. People expect us to be connect at all times.

I never carry cash unless I am going to a place that only takes it. I feel I get mugged no cash I lose nothing. Cancel cards have no loss. As long as the mugger doesn’t shoot me because they see I have no cash before I get away from them.

I'm going to continue using a physical Driver License and insurance card. I feel uncomfortable having these in electronic form. Sometimes people will ask for ID and need to keep it for a few minutes for some purpose or other - and I'd prefer they did not have full access to my 13.

i think its a culture change that will happen when you get it digital. I feel like with cards people are more relaxed taking it. with my phone they always ask if they can hold it or do anything with it. im sure things will change as society gets more comfortable with digital IDs.

Sounds like in that scenario… I wouldn’t really care? ?

Well, I can't speak for you.

But I know that if it happened to me, my wife and kids would probably be quite upset about it. That would be after the worry of wondering where the hell I was.

Unless of course, you might consider I think too highly of myself.
