Hi, :)

I just picked up my 2.4ghz 15" today, was very pleased after reading all of the complaints on here, thankfully mine appears to be in working order.. but..

I also grabbed a copy of Call of Duty 2 at the store thinking I'd take advantage of the graphical goodness of the pro, coming from being using a non-pro Macbook, I was really exicted. But when playing on medium settings, the game seems very jumpy and the framerate seems to be quite low/disappointing for most of the time. The game also crashes/won't load when high quality textures/graphic are selected from the options menu. Does this sound normal to people, or something that I should be concerned about?

thanks

Have you downloaded the 1.3 patch. I'm not sure if this will help or not but its worth a try anyway.

Have you left the settings on automatic or have you changed them to higher? As the automatic is rated and tested so that it won't lag.

I only have the demo of that one, but the rendering does seem a lil disappointing. I have the quality up tho and i don't get any crashes, just a little breaky hear or there.
When playing Battlefield 1942, I did experience crash issues. Crashes when loading and playing. Seem to occur whenever changes in settings occur. After a restart of the comp and the game, it was fine.
The real bad game is Unreal Tournament 2004; doesnt crash, but the gameplay quality doesnt exceed that that I got on my old powerbook g4 (1.3 ghz) very much at all..might even be worse. Very low framerates, even on lowest quality settings.
MOH spearhead, tho, my favorite game, plays marvelously on the highest quality settings. Breakthrough, tho, doesnt quite match up...

So thats my gaming commentary on the SR MBP 2.4 ghz/2 gb ram.
Apparently, it isnt much of a 3d gaming machine, despite the nice specs.

Can anyone recommend any free or demo, 3d games that would make me feel more happy about my new, overpriced system's rendering abilities???

I've played COD2 at decent framerates/gfx settings no problems, no lag.

Trick for me was to bring the Screen resolution down from native 1900 x 1200 to something more like 1152 x 684 and cut antialiasing to x2.

Tweaking resolution/settings should help??

Tried tweaking all of the settings without little difference. What kind of FPS are you getting outside? I kind of averaging at 25-30, dropping to the low 20s usually and not getting much higher than 45-50 in enclosed areas.

This is pretty disappointing as I'm pretty sure I remember getting those sort of results from my non-pro Macbook when I downloaded the demo. :(

I wouldn't say that. My MBP runs Need For Speed Most Wanted really great. 1600x1200(or something like that) with full details and so on. I get a really good framerate. Half Life 2 also runs perfect with that resolution.

I think it's maybe more an issue of not-so-good coding in the games for Mac. Until now I've only been impressed with my MBP both gaming(using Bootcamp and XP) and program wise(Photoshop CS3) :)

MBP Gaming

Hi,
Just want to add that my own gaming experience on my SR MBP is awful under MAC OS X. I downloaded Heroes of M&M V and a few demoes and every games I tried will at one point crash and often at that.

Though, under Vista using boot camp, my gaming experience is way better, I tried Oblivion and UT 2004 and it run rather well.

So for now, gaming for me is limited to XP or Vista using boot camp.

I just loaded my Windows version of COD 2 on my SR MBP 2.4 and it runs flawlessly under native resolution.

I did have an issue at first, it looked like there was an extremely dense fog over the whole screen. Audio worked great, even the HUD showed up. I turned off one thing (I can't remember what it was), but it worked perfectly after that.

Boot Camp works very well! I am very pleased with the switch over to Apple.

I have this mist across my screen as well! running COD2 on XP botcamp for the first time, do you know what setting it was? does anybody else know how to get rid of the fog?

Switch your graphics setting (if in Windows) from DirectX 9 to DirectX 7

If in Mac, let me know, couple of settings to tweak.

I found out what it was, you have to turn anti liasing off, I think the default is auto. I also chnaged my settings to directx 9. Anybody know what anti liasing does?

it doesnt make fog! something's broken with it.

AA puts a layer of blur so that you cant see sharp jaggy pixel lines, at a high resolution it is unnecessary, but at a low resolution it makes your eyes feel better.
