I know this is beating a dead horse, I searched and didnt find an answer yet, but has anyone gotten Call of Duty 4 to work with any kind of controller yet? If so, how?
:apple:

You really don't want to play a PC FPS with a controller it is a massive incombustible compared to mice

Ya gotta play with what your comfortable with. :) Some people learned to play games early on with game pads and that's what works for them. For me, a broken hand several years ago makes using a keyboard uncomfortable and sometimes painful. I use a mouse in one hand and a joystick (for movement) in the other for FPS games and it works fine for me.

True but you still use a mouse for looking I asume.

Infact most people do because its just plain faster than joystick look will ever be.

If you will for a moment note that unreal tournament 3 was slowed down for consoles to make it work better with the controller layout and while yes you can use a keyboard and mouse with the console the bulk of players use a game pad. The opposite is true for COD4 and once they update us to the same patch level as the PC players we will then be up against mouse reaction time veterans who are guaranteed to have been playing this game for much longer

Yep. Mouse is for looking, shooting, etc. Joystick is for moving, jumping, crouching etc.

All true. I find that my movement is not quite as quick with my Joystick as with keyboard, too. The gamepad people might have to decide how attached to their pads they are and if they should change their style of play. I've known some people to be pretty good with pads on PC games, but I guess it may depend on the game. I've only played the demo of COD4 on PC, but my friends tell me its very fast, so that may determine if people play with a controller or not.:)

Hi,

I want to use mouse and joystick at the same time, too. But I don't know how to do it and Which joystick is better for cod4. When I search the web, I found you.

You need a stick and control software for it. I recommend a stick with lots of buttons. Preferably buttons on the stick itself, you probably wont use any on the base. The advantage of the stick is that you don't have to reach all over the keyboard or miss-key. Depending on the game tho it may not be as fast as keys. On my Mac for Halo and COD1 I used to use a Logitech extreme 3D pro, they can be found on sale for as little as $25. Amazon has them and many other online stores or even bestbuy etc.

The Logitech when I used it only came with "Wingman" software for the PC and on my PC it was adequate. However, it did not have software for the Mac, as they expected mac games to have built in support for pads and sticks (basically mac users getting the shaft again). For control software on the Mac I use USB Overdrive:

USB Overdrive allowed me to configure both the stick and my logitech wireless laser mouse to play in games. Its not hard to configure, but definitely read the manual. It used to come as a demo so you can try it out and see if you like it. I assigned things like jump (usually spacebar) to the trigger; crouch, reload, use item etc. to the buttons and switch weapon was done by pushing the hat switch up. You'll have to make up your mind what config works best for you. Use a multi-button mouse so you can assign other actions to it besides fire and aim, like zoom or melee attack. Pay attention to how sensitive you make the stick to movement. There's a setting from 10% to 100%. At 10% you'll have to move the stick all the way to one side to get moving and that's too slow of a reaction time for FPS. Set it at a higher % to initiate movement faster.

There are other control software for the mac, maybe some one else will chime in to share their experience.

A word of caution on the logitech stick, some people really like it but I've found that they wear out fast. I'm currently using a Saitek evo on my PC box and its software lets me configure it to use in FPS games. Its more friendly to left handed use and has stood up to wear and tear better than the logitech. However, I haven't used it on my mac yet with USB overdrive so I don't know if there are any issues with it.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask, and I'll answer as best I can. :)

I saw Logitech extreme 3D pro in retail store. it seems to be good. You explained very well. I think I can do it. But if I can't, I will ask you. thanks.:)

Hi. will that software allow you to set a sensitivity for games that dont support pads? im an xboxer so i prefer the pad and play better with it. however the software i used (controllermate) wont allow me to creep and move slowly, its 100% or 0%. i just plain cant play the game without being able to move just a bit, if that makes sense?

sorry for digging this up
