Call Volume - Should I Return It?

I have an FJ Cruiser, which isn't the quietest truck on the highway. I literally can't hear ANYTHING when I'm holding the Iphone to my ear if I'm trying to talk. Don't worry - I'm not one of those obnoxious SUV-driving cellphone people :)

Anyway, would you all say that you'd have similar volume in this situation?
 
Do you have your iPod volume limit on? when it was on on my iPhone it also limited my call volume.

I am sure you have, but you adjusted volume control while on a call? I ask because I am starting to wonder if some people are turning up volume when on standby thinking its overall volume.

Mine was not too bad at all, but changing the iPod volume limit did help a lot also.
 
Another common problem is that people leave the clear plastic on to protect the screen. If its covering the ear piece, you can hardly hear at all. Remove that and it makes a world of difference.
 
all plastic was removed on day one, and the only thing on is "sound check" on my ipod. volume limiter is off, and I adjust volume when in a call session to max....

in fact I even having trouble hearing people when walking through the park in a somewhat noisy environment.....
 
I would return it. A lot of people had the same problem.

By the way how do you like the FJ Cruiser? That's a hot truck. What color did you get?
 
i have had 2 iphones (first one had battery issues/exchanged it) and both call volumes have been about the same = low but def. not loud.

i live in nyc and the street noise is pretty loud and i haven't had any problem hearing people.

what is weird is when you use the speakerphone for a phone call and you can barely hear anything but when playing music it is super loud.....

hoping the next firmware update will correct a lot of these minor problems.

so when a lot of these people had the same problem, it's not considered normal til the software update? I haven't done a restore yet....

I have the same issue, you're not alone. Went back to the apple store and was told by a 'genius' that it was within spec. annoying but I'm hoping for an update that fixes this.
 
The volume is definitely a problem for me, both with the phone and the speakerphone. It is hardly audible is there is any noise at all- the worst of any phone I have ever had. I am unfortunately debating about returning it in the next two days before my 14 day return limit hits. It is really too bad because I generally like the phone a lot, but if I can't hear it is not of much use and back to the Blackjack. Blackjack had an outdoor mode which was very loud.
 
Same prob here- but I have the plastic on and will pull it off. But - how to you change the ipod sound lmiit? and does it really affect the phone volume- the instructions I read said it only affected music and videos..... ?
 
Same question as Lane. Have been looking on both the iPhone and iTunes and cannot find how to disable a volume limit.
 
Have you thought about just buying a bluetooth headset? I find call volumes to be much better on bluetooth headsets than on a phone itself with any phone out there.

Oooh, I didn't know that!! Seriously, I thought that I had to use headphones or my bluetooth with the iPhone because the handset is so low. Geesh. I feel silly. But I ordered some iPhone covers that won't cover the open areas. I feel so stupid now.
 
If I have to put on a headset just to hear the phone I am taking it back!

Go to General Settings,
Scroll down select iPod
Make sure "Sound Check" is off
Set "Volume Limit" to off

I had the same issue with hearing calls when the headset to ear and yes, I had taken off the plastic from the beginning.

Someone earlier had said set the "Volume Limit" to on, but the correct setting is off.

The volume for both the receiver headset and speakerphone is better.
 
Does the volume limit, in fact, limit the phone volume and not just music and video like it says?

My volume is pretty good through the speaker or through the headset, but when the iPhone is held as a 'phone' to my ear, the volume set to full is not very loud. With much environmental noise, I find it very difficult to hear.

Did you adjust the volume limit as above. If not try it - and I bet ya read it, but in case ya skipped over it - make sure there is no plastic film on it yet, its not there for protection.
 
It may have worked for you guys, but I tried it and it did nothing at all. Looks like the Placebo effect to me.

I to agree, the ear speaker for when you are holding phone to your head is to low. I have had lots of phones and I can't use the iPhone in my truck unless I pull over. Its a real pain in the butt
