Calling all iMacians to help this DUDE

Alright. I've been lurking through this forum for sometime now; great forum folks.

On topic: So, here's the case: I am a 19 year old bloke from India, and I want to buy an iMac.

I can wait, but the issue is: I am not sure when will the new iMac come out. Even if it's out in the US, I don't see it coming officially in India anytime soon.

As of now, I decided to hook up with a 27 inch iMac. And if my dear Indian (and non-Indian) friends reading this, let me tell you that the iMac high-end device (the 27", i3 processor) costs around $2500.

I am willing to take the risk; risk because I -- and my Windows friends -- have never experienced what a true iMac hardware or Mac OS feels like.

Also, the sole purpose of buying an iMac is not to study (would have bought Macbook pro in that case), but to browse the internet and be more productive (I am a blogger). And play games on the huge screen (always urged to play crysis).

Over to you: What do you think? I am tight on the money, but I can definitely try to squeeze in 2500 dollars for this machine.

Well, there is official Indian Apple Online Store (you can't order online though) so if iMacs are updated, India should get the new ones as well. If you're going to game, then I would try to squeeze an extra 300$ (18 000Rs) for the high-end. The better GPU will definitely help when gaming, especially if you're going to play games like Crysis

I hear the rumors, with no official source. So, I think there is at least 6 months of waiting to hear the announcement of new iMac from Steve Jobs.

And thanks for the link, I took the plunge and spoke--last week--with the iStore staff (reliance network) as there's no Apple official store in India. They said: the 27 inch is model is Rs.1,06,000. This was supposed to be the only high-end model they have. Have to enquire again.

Also, I NEVER had a graphic card on my laptop and PC. But I do play games (once in two-months or so) whenever possible. So, yes I am not a hardcore gamer and I don't think I'll be playing games on my iMac all day long.

I am scratching my head right now, thinking if I can afford Rs.1,23,900 model. It's a one-time investment--so, I should get this. But, damn... it gets way too costlier. We never owned anything like this before, so even the other model would suffice.

All depends on how much we can save.

I think you news to define the "purpose" of your Mac. Content creation is a must, but game playing is your sway point. I could have bought a much more expensive Mac, but I know my excitement of gaming was just that, excitement, and in 3yrs I've never actually played a hardcore game (WoW doesn't count) on it. The less money u spend on it, the more you can spend on ram upgrades over time, SSD upgrades or an investment that will pay off % points over time.
Your love of the apple product will remain even if you don't get "the best"

Seeing your signature(27" iMac, iPhone and the iPad), I expected the Apple fanboyism to blow out. For $2500, I can buy a Alienware machine I guess, but like I said I am not a hardcore gamer.

I think thats what the windows guys will never understand, the Mac is a lifestyle choice....compare it to a guy who builds the most powerful/souped up car there is, it goes fast but looks like crap.....next to a Maserati, cool, slick and elegant. add to that OSX, the best desktop Unix there is (Linux is a good server OS but does not cut it on the desktop - *nix is way better than windows in everyway) and the quality hardware build/looks and it blows everything else away.....

let those windows guys stay with their 1000 driver updates/patches/viruses bloatware of an OS........go Mac.

If its for playing games, might want to get a windows box. Otherwise, I think you will be very happy with it. imacs are great; movies and working are so easy. Might want to double check support in India...it would be terrible if something broke on the imac and you couldnt get it fixed or had to do it yourself

True. It's just that I am excited. The truth is: I haven't even played WoW, Crysis, Resident evil. For all I remember, my current PC supports only games like Counter strike, Halo(the old version, obviously), Age of empire, etc.

I've been a PC user for more than 5 years now. And I can definitely say that in these 5 years -- my gaming hasn't taken a toll. In total its definitely not more than 100 hours of gaming. Maybe, because I never had a graphic card.

That's it. I wanted to experience what a Mac feels like. In India, iMac ain't a popularly used/known product -- obviously because of the price tag; perhaps I am lucky to know what a iMac is, and even more luckier if I can buy it.

I've asked for student discount at the store, and they told me I'll be given iMac at 6% off from the original price.

One thing is for sure: when the iMac arrives, I would be drooling all over it.

Just now, I've had a discussion with my brother on buying the high-end Mac model. I don't know how we will do it, but he says we CAN.

It's true that I am a Windows user; and I love playing with those virus. However, I think I've had it enough. Time to bring home the REAL FATHER of computers.

As for the first part, I am just a casual gamer. Not an addict.

The second statement you said, is very much true. I can't imagine having to pay for fixing iMac hard disk and stuffs like that. That will not only make a hole in my pocket, but also in my heart. Will talk with them and ask for some kind of apple protection plan.
