I'm about to take on a new project. In the past I have worked with another company and the billing has gone through them, so I'm not quite sure how much to charge my client!

So, anyone who has experience with web design, I was wondering if you could tell me the average cost that you charge your clients per hour.

I suppose I should elaborate more on the project. It's a marketing web site for a book, and right now it's hosted under Joomla! which seems to be some sort of PHP template thing. I have not a clue how to use it, but it doesn't seem to difficult if I just use Dreamweaver and then upload everything following their guidelines.

I anticipate around 20 hours or so on it.

That doesn't sound like you're doing any kind of design at all. They already have a CMS, so are you just adding content to their site? I hope you know what you're doing before you get started, because if you don't know what Joomla is then you might want to do your research. Depending on what you're supposed to be doing and how you use Dreamweaver, you may not be able to do it with Dreamweaver. It would help to know more about what you're supposed to be doing and if there's any actual design involved.
 
Clearing things up...

The guy is pretty much saying that he's looking for a creative design, because "he's not creative at all"...something I hear a lot from clients. So, right now, I'm thinking that this will be HTML/PHP (because of Joomla) and just be design and inserting text into the design. So I'm not really developing - more designing I guess.

Being a student I'm probably going to charge a bit less, but any figures you guys can give me would be appreciated.
 
My studio charges $100/hr for design and $150 for programming.

I see most freelancers with a degree charging approximately $40-$50 an hour for design.

Since you're a student, and this sounds like it's a favor more than anything else. I'd probably charge about $20/hr. Or in this case $400-$500 based on your estimated time.

Really? Around here studios charge anywhere from 150-300 per hour. And experienced designers around $75 - $200 per hour depending on who your clients are.

Geographic differences, friend. You're in California, where everything is more expensive. Our cost of living is really low in Texas, and although we charge more for our bigger, national clients, most of our business comes from Texas.
 
I charge $45/hr for imaging and $60/hr for copy editing.
Base price on a simple site (Home page plus three or four links and a contact form) is $360.00

I usually subcontract the hosting, manage the yearly fees, and do all of the site updates for my clients. (IMO, it's a mistake to allow a client to manage any aspect of a website, unless they are very organized and tech-savvy)
