Jumped ship from android devices last year and got the 6s. I’ll be receiving the 8 tomorrow and have some questions for the elite.

I recently learned about the whole battery cycle thing and I want to make sure I get the best out of this new device so here are a few questions...

1. Will we have to calibrate the battery? I plan on using wireless charging a lot. I usually charge my phone every night when I go to bed. If it needs a boost during the day I’ll charge it some but never to 100%

2. Force closing apps by pressing the home button and swiping up to get rid of them, continue to do so? I picked up the habit using android devices and now with my 6s I do it obsessively lol.

3. I plan to be doing a restore from ICloud, I already purchased the 50gb for $1 and did a backup. Does this seem to go pretty smooth, will it restore all app folders etc?

4. Apple Care, I had the 9$ plan from vzw which seems like garbage to me seeing how the deductibles to replace the phone will probably be $200+. I plan to sign up for apple care tomorrow when I get my 8. Advice on this?

5. When I leave for work I usually turn off WiFi (work outside) and only turn on blue tooth when I receive a call. Is this necessary? I do it thinking I’m preserving the battery. (And yes I’ve read you need to go into settings to actually disable WiFi/Bluetooth with iOS 11)

That’s it for now. Thanks in advanced for any helpful responses.

1. I have never calibrated an iPhone battery and have never had any issues. Apple themselves would surely recommend calibration if it made a difference? An expert from a battery manufacturer recommended keeping batteries between 20 and 80% charge. I’ll try digging the link out.

2. Force-closing apps doesn’t save battery (apparently) - http://www.idownloadblog.com/2015/1...apps-to-save-battery-life-is-a-terrible-idea/

Hey @Ebru, welcome to greener pastures ;)

1. I don’t normally calibrate the battery, for it isn’t really necessary. Generally, problems don’t arise from normal use. However, if you see the phone dying at say 15% or something crazy, then a calibration may be a good troubleshooting step.

2. I used to obsessively force close all apps too haha. Lately, I’ve come around and scaled that back because apparently it saves battery (stopping apps from freshly loading into memory). Really, I just keep my most frequently used apps open constantly; if one app is draining the battery noticeably, close and relaunch. Could be a stuck process or something.

3. The process usually goes smoothly. There is now an easy setup process where the new device scans an on-screen graphic displayed on your older device; iCloud settings are copied over from here seamlessly. I can’t exactly speak to restore behavior now, haven’t done one in a long time.

5. People will say that the radios (WiFi and BT) take a minute amount of energy now. That may be true, but hey, no energy consumption > small energy consumption, right?

I'm also currently trying to figure out what the best browser is for ios 11 and the iphone 8, something fast and doesn't use a ton of data..

I currently have Firefox, Puffin, dolphin. Any recommendations? Also thanks for your input!

Anything for your use case that would discourage using Safari? Just wondering if you’re looking for certain features.

Just something fast and doesn't eat a lot of data when not on wifi. I've been switching between chrome and safari trying to decide, switching and closing tabs is something I personally don't like in safari.

I don't do a lot of web browsing to begin with except for these forums since I've joined the apple cult. Then if I just need to look something up in the spot.

Hmmm, well I personally have the most experience with Safari. I’ve flirted very minimally with other browsers, but not enough to give me a true picture of their efficiency or usefulness.

I use a content blocker with Safari, which makes loading webpages quickly and with lesser data experience. No complaints there! Beyond that, the security features built into Safari I’d put over Chrome’s.

I will ask however: since you do tend to browse minimally, do you believe that tab switching/closing is enough of a drawback to push you elsewhere?

Kind of like you said I've always used Firefox primarily, and with this new phone going out if the comfort zone to find the right browser... For the last hour now I've managed to have chrome primary and safari second just gotta let it grow on me.

What content blocker do you use is that an add or default in settings?

Gotcha. One thing I will say is that since Safari is the native app, its code will be more optimized for iOS. Typically, that means better battery life and in many cases, better performance.

I use 1Blocker for my content blocker. It tends to do a pretty great job, but of course doesn’t stop everything. There is a free version with just the ad blocking portion, which is the absolutely essential piece. I have the paid upgrade ($4 or $5 IAP) which offers other configurable packages.

For App Store ad blockers like the one above, they will be enabled by going into Safari’s settings and toggling them on.

I'm sold. Going to try safari for the next couple days and see how it goes. Thanks for your help/advice!

@Ebru hopefully your time with Safari has been going well. I know you have used Firefox often in the past, so this might be interesting to you!

Not sure how things will evolve with Safari too, but it seemed to me you might enjoy this as an option.

Getting used to safari. Will definitely have to check the new Firefox browser out.

Hold down the refresh button in the address bar, until the menu pops up! Then just select it.
