I discovered a few weeks back that my boss started recieving phone calls from my phone number. This was extra wierd because I didn't even have his number until we had a 'you called me?//no i didnt' moment.

My first phone was a motorola RAZR, and after the first few weeks of 'making' calls to my boss I upgraded to an iphone, so now we're both on an iphone.

Everything seemed fine until today when I discovered he's starting to get missed calls from my number again. I've trawled all over my AT&T bills but there's never anything being dialed out to his number. AT&T are telling us there's no way possible he could be getting calls that weren't created so it's a great mystery.

I have a fully updated 3G S and he has either a 3G or a first gen iphone. Not brave enough to suggest to him that it might be his phone as I'm only a contract worker, and he can fire me in a second. It's naturally making things uncomfortable.

What could be causing this?

How about this "Sir with all do respect maybe it's your handset that's acting up" any decent man would except that....

He isn't a contact. I never had his number until he called me to see who had called him in the first place.

If I'm going to accuse his phone I need some sort of valid theory.

I've suspected his phone from the start; I just can't find anything online to substantiate the suspicion and I've never heard of the problem before. Apparently I'm not the only random call he gets, but I'm the only one he personally knows.

My entire job is based on troubleshooting and finding solutions - I'm feeling stupid for not being able to find what I need to know to fix this :) If it was just a firmware/itunes issue, surely there'd be more people than 'one guy' in the entire world having these problems...right?

Your boss is getting missed calls but no voicemail?
Does the phone ever ring when your number is supposedly calling?
Does your number ever call your boss when you are around your boss?
Either of you on a jailbroken or unlocked iPhone?

Have you actually seen that the missed call on your boss' iphone is indeed YOUR number? Someone could be calling your boss and then using call forwarding to send it to your number. Thus when your boss dials the missed call, it would go to your phone, but if you check the number he called it would be a different number.

I think a coworker is a plausible reason.

Do any of your friends or co-workers have an iPhone? If so one of them could be messing with you. There are a few apps for jailbroken phones that let you call someone and use any caller ID number you can think of. There are web sites that do the same thing too.

Ahem, I mean thats what I've heard ;)

I hadn't thought of the call forwarding suggestion. That's a neat idea, I'll pursue that one first chance tomorrow.

I also wasn't aware of JB apps that allowed spoofing numbers, but I can't think of anyone deliberately trying to screw me. The one girl at work who had my number is an unlikely source of the problem (not a lot of technical skill, and not malicious).

I'm starting to get calls from my boss's number now, and when I ask him about it he swears he didn't call me. So I'm thinking it's more and more his phone/firmware.

The number on his screen is mine, but I'll have to make sure it's the right prefix. could be someone from a different area code mis-dialling his number...but the chances of that are -really- low, I think.

Thanks for the help so far. :)

I'm 90% certain a single person that has access to both numbers is spoofing both of you.

See thats a problem when you try to think you know people, the ones who look like the ones with no technical skill or look like they wouldn't do anything are those who strike at the least expected moment! ;)

Without knowing which model/firmware the other phone is using (other than NOT a 3G S), what are the chances it really is a problem itunes can fix?
