Not without jailbreaking. The camera kit doesn't "read" anything. The iPad will allow for transfer of compatible files provided that they're in the DCIM folder on the connected device or SD card. However, those are limited to photo and video files. To access any other types of files you need to jailbreak.

No

The camera connector kit is only good for transferring fotos. And contrary to what some have said, a USB keyboard does not work either.

curiously, if you put a PDF file in the DCIM folder and connect with CCK, the iPad will see that PDF file in the Camera Import screen, complete with valid preview thumbnail. you can then select it and click on Import - then in your Imported photos section you'll see a generic gray icon labelled "PDF"

but you can't open or read that file, tapping on it does nothing. you can delete the file, but you can't even email it or copy it - so I'm not convinced it actually imported fully. the file doesn't show up in Image Capture on the Mac when you connect your iPad, nor does it show up in other photo-album-aware apps on the iPad, further hinting it wasn't actually imported. But interesting that the iPad teases you by seemingly letting you import the PDF with the CCK...

I am on firmware 3.2.1 and the USB Keyboard does indeed work for me.

It pops up a message when I first connect it:
"The attached USB device is not supported"

I click dismiss, and I can start typing away no problem. E-Mail's, Notes, it all works.

Trying to figure out a an easy way to get pdfs into the ipad without any web access or wifi....

Well, the "easiest" way is to drag and drop them in iTunes. Just drag your .pdf file onto your iPad icon under "Devices" on the left-hand side of your iTunes window. They'll show up in your iBooks application.

That's not accurate, you can easily use SD cards to store additional movies for the iPad.

Can you provide more detail on this? I have been searching for a way to do this without jb'ing the iPad, and have not had any success.
thanks

As long as the movies are in the appropriate format for the iPad, just drop them into the DCIM folder on a SD card and they will show up on the iPad when inserted into the SD card adapter. Once you import them they will appear in your "Photos" and will be playable through there (you will, of course need to delete other video files to make room for the import).

GoodReader

I don't own one myself, but I imagine you should be able to read the PDF, Here's how I'd do it.. but I can't test it myself so someone can confirm or deny this.

Place your PDF inside the DCIM folder on the SD card, then import it and open up GoodReader (don't be cheap just buy full version, it's totally the best 1$ I ever spent) then you should be able to read it.

Really? This might convince me to get the connection kit.

this does NOT work, I have the CCK and have verified the Photos app can't view PDF files.

you can import PDF files this way, using CCK and PDF file in the DCIM folder. but after importing, you get a blank gray icon labelled "PDF" in your Imported album. Clicking on it does nothing, you can't email it and you can't copy it. you can only delete this file.

even if you try to view your Imported album using Goodreader, you can't see the PDF file. I suspect it's not actually correctly imported into Photos app, but the CCK tries to import it and just results in a dummy/empty icon which Photos app doesn't know what to do. it's a good idea, but I also have Goodreader and already tried this previously, and it doesn't work :(

so unfortunately, the CCK can't be used for importing PDF files in this way.

Well guys, I was having a problem with my jailbreak, so I officially went up to 3.2.2. I said screw it, did a restore and update and went to 3.2.2. I plugged in my camera connection kit, and it popped up the same message about this USB device is not supported. I went into Notes, and my USB keyboard WAS IN FACT WORKING.

So, there ya go :). If you want video, I can provide that if you wish :).
