Granted it IS a cellphone, but the camera has some weird traits.
For just shooting a static picture it's OK
If there is action...big shutter delay causes missed moments...
If camera is panning or subject in motion...Big distortion happens

The iPhone camera is just a cellphone camera. And to me, the limitations implied in that is what makes it at all worthwhile. A digital camera which took pristine 2Mpix snaps still wouldn't replace my regular camera, and would also have no added value.

The "happy accidents" and lo-fi charm of cellphone cameras is what makes them fun, especially once you get used to working within their limitations. The iPhone's proved no good at taking pictures of my cat (near-field movement = blur), but I love that photo of the racecar (mid-field movement = distortion).

I agree 100%.

Iphone camera just sucks. Period. (.)

I'd "take the hit" for a lower res 640x480 WITHOUT distortion / motion problems.

My Treo never had this issue, nor did my Samsung - and those are much older phones.

Glad I'm not alone.

The camera sucks, but it was to be expected (maybe not to this degree). Anyway, I have my Nikon D50 with me all the time. I just wish the iPhone could shoot video, even if it was distorted.

I just wish it could take a picture. It doesn't actually focus anywhere. Low light is super pathetic even when mounted dead still. And in the dark... wow. For some reason lights, especially if they are flashing throws the camera into a fit and it gets all weird.

Hopefully a software upgrade can correct some of the issues.

Seriously, it's just a phone camera. Sigh.

I really would love to see video support. The fun part about it is, most likely video support and even distortion fixes can be made via software updates. Make sure to give this feedback to apple.

This photo was taken w/ an iphone and it seems like the focus is outstanding for a cell camera.

It is an Apple product, so why shouldn't you? And if it wasn't going to be done as well as every other Apple product then why do it?

That's like saying Apple missed on the iPhone because you can't get all your movies and TV shows on it (iPod capability but limited).

As someone said...it's a cell phone.

I'll take visual VM and outstanding address book features over a (better) camera any day. The camera is great for everyday pictures. I carry a Real Camera for when I know I'll be taking important pictures.

It's a cell phone camera. It is way better than the crappy phone I had previously. Not to mention I could never access those pics without paying a ridiculous internet fee just to get pics off my locked phone so they just sat in the phone, looking ugly even on a 1.5" screen.

Took this with iPhone. As for the delay, iPhone takes picture when you relase the button. And if you do that there is no lag.

The iPhone camera, or any cell phone camera, is there to take pictures in a spur of the moment sort of way (or pictures of fake Apple products in an elevator). Most people I know have a real camera in addition to the cell phone camera so they can get some worthwhile pictures. I do like that distortion though, but if you want to take non-distorted good pictures, get one of these.

I don't expect it to best my D50, but I would think it would be capable of digital zoom, and quality/size changes.

I am perfectly happy with the amount of space the iPhone has, since I came from a 2GB Nano.

I don't think that at all. Why should I?

For $600, damn right it should. No video, and that horrible 3 sec or so pause before it actually takes the pic without a visual on screen count down like photobooth.

Let's review a bit:

1) No flash in web
2) No flash for camera
3) No MMS
4) No video recording
5) No chat
6) No 3G
7) No third party apps
8) No custom ring tones (without hack)
9) No insurance for accidental or water damage (hell, my RAZR had coverage with Cingular but NOT my $600 iPhone?!)
10) No removable battery
11) No Bluetooth ObEx
12) No GPS
13) No way to save email attachments/pics on the phone or as wallpaper
14) No home screen customization

and on, and on, and on.

Don't get me wrong, I like the iPhone, but every time someone stops me to ask how I like it, and I tell them "I love it" (c',mon, I'm a Mac guy, I have to save face lol), I feel myself cringe a little each time. For $600, a two year contract and increased monthly fees, all these issues are already corrected/non-existent in most other inexpensive smart phones. Just because it's an iPod and multi-touch screen doesn't give Apple the right in jerking us off with less capabilities. :(

pfft for 600 maybe they should be ;). (Italics mine).

Otherwise yeah I do agree with your post. People ask about thing they know they don't give a damn about. My brother made not being able to change the battery out to be a huge thing; when I asked him when has he ever brought a new battery for his phone his answer was never.

...and that horrible 3 sec or so pause before it actually takes the pic...

It takes the photo when you take your finger off the "button". Bearing that in mind there is no delay. Figured that out after a couple of pics.

Just put your finger on the button, compose the shot, and then take the pic.

I would just like to add that i love my camera on my iphone. Sure, its only 2MP, but it takes damn good pictures for that. Sure its no 10MP digital camera, but I take beautifful pictures with my phone, as if it was just a regular camera. There is no delay or anything.

Which Treo did you have? I find the iphone camera to be better in almost every respect than my treo 650's. My only gripe is that i keep hitting the "shutter" button prematurely - a real button would make my life easier. (note: it takes the photo when you release the button, not when you tap it, so one thing I've found is that if I press and hold while i compose the shot, then release when i'm ready to snap the picture, things work better).

took this with my iPhone

Did you resize that photo? The photo should be around 1600x1200 (@4:3, 1920x1080@16:9) if it is from a 2MP camera. Here is a pic from my trip to Nags Head.

seriously, it's one thing to find faults and ask for help or a fix, but stop b1tching and whining..seriously, if you don't like the features DONT BUY IT...otherwise, if it's not constructive, who the hell cares?! does it hurt you that bad?!

I didn't know most of the issues would be enough of an issue until AFTER I bought the phone, I thought "eh, I can live with that."

More over, how is attacking people who post constructive criticism any better? Just shows how negative and whiny you may be...
