The macro / flower icon setting is what this question pertains to.

How do I stop letting the camera decide to enter this mode? I’ve noticed a lot recently if I’m taking a picture of say a person or something in a darker environment, it switches to the macro mode and the picture is grainy or blurry. Going back to the default setting and retaking the picture is perfect.

It sucks trying to take a picture in the moment just to have it switch to that setting and ruin the picture.

Control automatic macro switching

You can control when Camera automatically switches to the Ultra Wide camera for capturing macro photos and videos.
  1. Open Camera

    on your iPhone.
  2. Get close to your subject.
When you get within macro distance of your subject,
    the Auto Macro On button
    appears on the screen.
  3. Tap
    the Auto Macro On button
to turn off automatic macro switching.
Tip: If the photo or video becomes blurry, you can back up or tap .5x to switch to the Ultra Wide camera.
  4. Tap
    the Auto Macro Off button
to turn automatic macro switching back on.
To turn off the manual Macro Control when taking photos and videos, go to Settings

> Camera, then turn off Macro Control.
If you want to maintain your Macro Control setting between camera sessions, go to Settings

> Camera > Preserve Settings, then turn on Macro Control.

You went to Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings > Turn on Macro Control? Then if you go in to the Camera app and turn it off, it should remember it and stay off.

So I had to check this, I didn't select preserve settings before. I just toggled that setting. then opened the camera app and pointed it towards my keyboard........turned to macro mode. What's the point of the setting? lol

I think you might have missed the last part of my reply: "Then if you go in to the Camera app and turn it off, it should remember it and stay off."

When Preserve Settings is on for a particular function (macro mode in this case), it'll remember the last used setting for that function. So if you leave the camera app with the function on, it'll be on the next time you use the app. If you leave the camera app with the function off, it'll be off the next time you use the app.

I triple checked this now cause I was curious. Nope. No matter what it still throws it into macro if its too close.

edit,
toggled them each again and forced reset my phone and i believe it stays off now.
