Help! I must escape Camera Roll, which I guess means I must break from Photos. The lack of options in Camera Roll has gone beyond frustrating - I now avoid simple tasking like editing pics, building videos, sharing b/c pouring through hundreds of photos is time consuming, dizzying and maddening.

I know I can move them into Albums - but of course they stay in Camera Roll, removing them removes them completely and there is no way of knowing which pics are already in an album.

Is there an app out there that will allow me to organize photos into albums (not do it for me) and free up the library? I will take them to another app to edit if I have to. I have searched and searched and haven't found.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Have you considered something like SmugMug, which will upload directly from your camera to their cloud service? Then once you are SM you can organize into albums on their service. It is a paid service, though. I use it for my own 15+ years worth of photo hosting.

Not sure it is any use now but I use smart albums a lot, and one is "Not in any Album". Quickly see what is imported but not allocated to anything.

I also use it for lens, camera type etc.

I think your view of Photos is not realistic. Its a silo for totally disorganized folks snapping the same pic every 30 seconds. Organization and DAM features are not needed. I use Pixelmator Photo, Lightroom and My Pics. They are all totally independent of the Photos library/DAM. Sync'd albums for iOS devices are done in Lightroom (current year only) and My Pics (prior years and fairly static). Just starting to get into Pixelmator. Nice edit module, haven't pushed it much on the DAM side.
