Hi there, I’d like to know what you think about the new Xr camera in comparison to the 8 plus one.
Which one can I expect to do the best

1. Overall snapshots
2. Low light pics
3. Portrait mode photos

I’m thinking of which one to get by the end of the year coming from a regular iPhone 7.
I’d like to have the new form factor but maybe I’d go another two years with the old one. Camera quality next to battery life is by far my main interest.
Can’t afford an Xs though, while Xr would be a financially unhealthy act but doable.
Thank you for your help.

Nobody here can say for sure.

But here's the secret: the main camera has not changed much since the iPhone 7 Plus.

I'd say 1 and 2 will be the exact same thing, and 3. Apple has been saying that Portrait requires the dual camera, but now they say it doesn't. It may be that indeed the dual camera setup is better, or that they were lying all along and the iPhone XR may do it just fine.

Also the XR is getting all the latest camera bells and whistles. I'd get the XR.

Thank you! Of course not for sure, just gathering opinions and because I don’t understand much of camera hardware.

XR is expected to perform better with #1-2.

The camera in iPhone 8 is largely the same as iPhone 7.

The iPhone Xs and XR is Apple's first time since iPhone 6s they increased camera pixel size from 1.22 to 1.4 micrometers. You can expect #2 to improve for sure.

If battery life is important, the XR also significantly outperforms the 8 Plus there.
