Camino Browser

New to mac and have been trying all the browsers. I like the functionality of Omni-Web, but it is very slow. They say they are improving the rendering engine. The fastest in side-by-side testing is Camino, but no spell checker or autofill. Safari has great features but is slower than Camino plus the fonts on websites are too small and weird. Too bad you can't find one that offers everything

No, just observation and maybe someone has a better alternative or information on new enhancements to various browsers. Otherwise, just have some breakfast and talking to you.

Have you tried Opera? Also, if you're into trying different ones, Shiira is worth a shot, I guess. The engine is the same as Safari, but there are substantial other differences that might sway you.

Personally, I have a Firefox beta, a Camino beta, Safari and Opera on my computer, and I use Safari almost 100% right now. If Camino had a spell checker, I would probably defect.... Or if I stop going to forums frequently for a while, I would probably move back over to Firefox for Adblock, because I like it better than the options in Safari.

they are working on a spell checker for Camino if i am not mistaken, it is by far the fastest, and i think the speed and functionality of the browser is awesome. just a few more features added in, and it would be the pefect browser in my opinion. its coming along nicely. i use it as my main browser, Safari hasn't been used in weeks

Agreed. the speed of Camino is obvious. Have been testing other browsers next to Camino and even give that browser a one click head start and Camino always finishes sooner. Spell check would make it perfect.

In case you don't know, there's a preview version of Opera 9 available now. Played a little bit with it, but there was nothing obvious new. Most of the stuff seems to be changes to the render engine (it can almost do the Acid2 test now).

I'd recommend Opera. It seems to be a Love It Or Hate It kind of browser, so you need to try it for yourself.

Yeah, I got Opera when they gave away licenses as part of an anniversary celebration or something like that. To me it isn't bad, but I've never found anything in it that makes me miss it when I close it and re-open Safari, etc.

The only features I find missing are the vBulletin GUI in writing threads and replys. None of the buttons work, although it's whimsical whether this is Firefox or vBulletin.

Try to clear you cache. I had the same problem, but a a Cleanup+reload fixed it.

I have these browsers as well, and I also seem to use Safari all the time. Not that the other browsers are amazing, but I honestly can't spell that well. Besides that, I like Safari's interface much better.

I've had Camino installed for a while but haven't really used it much other than to check websites in it. The other day I decided it use it. In the past, I've heard people talk about different browsers being fast, and to be honest, I've just not been able to see the difference for myself. However, Camino is WAY faster than Safari, and I definitely notice the difference. The speed increase alone has convinced me to switch to it, at least for now. There are still some things that I like better about Safari, like spell checking, and superior drag support for text, but Camino is still excellent. I've been using recent nightly builds of WebKit in Safari lately, and that's what I'm comparing Camino with. For now, Camino is ahead. I can only imagine that it's going to get better in subsequent versions (I'm using a nightly build of 1.0a1+).

I am doing this same excerise myself since I got tired of the slowness of Safari and I think I am going to use Firefox (with a Safari-like theme) for now. I was impressed with the speed of both Camino and Firefox compared to Safari, but I liked being able to use themes and extensions in Firefox better than the little bit of additional speed one gets when using Camino.

I tell you what, I don't care what features are added to Safari if they don't improve the speed of the rendering of pages, I'll never use it.

I'd used Safari ever since I got a Mac, and I found the interface pretty much spot on. But eBay was always slow, and Safari recently has been hanging on pretty much anything. I'm mega impatient with sites loading, so I switched to Camino, and it's so much faster. There are things about the interface I don't like as much, like the lack of alt+cursor, and it looks uglier, and I miss when you drag a picture off a site it doesn't show you a ghost image. But that's just eye candy stuff. Basically it works very well, and is very fast, and I've pretty much abandoned Safari. I imagine the next build will be much better looking, etc, and then I'll never look back.
