I would like to run a 30'' dell monitor from my 1st gen MBA...is that possible?

If not, is there anything to make that possible?

The 1st gen x3100 graphics card can only support a digital resolution of 1920X1200.

So to answer your question no it will not run the 30" in it's native 2560x1600 resolution. If you run the 30" in 1920x1200 it will just stretch thing and it just doesn't look good. Hit up the local apple store and put their 30" display in 1920x1200 and judge for yourself.

I would suggest sticking with a 24"

The 2nd gen can push a 30" to its native resolution.

It can't even output 1920x1200, the maximum resolution possible when connecting a 30" display to a single-link DVI port is 1280x800. Yes its true, search the forum if you dont believe me

Max res is 1920x1200 and it's really very poor at doing that. I plugged ours into the 23" Cinema Display and when running it as a second screen it was just awful. Really laggy and moving windows around looked like watching a slideshow.

If you plug a 30" display into a single link DVI plug it will output at 1280x800 (1/4 the resolution of the display) so that 4 pixels make up one pixel at that res and there is no interpolation.

Looks awful though.

Upgrading to a rev B MBA is the ONLY way to make that possible with an MBA. Even a low end rev B MBA has an Nvidia 9400m capable of beautiful output to the 30" ACD.

Best wishes.
