Can a 3rd party app, while running in the foreground, read incoming SMS and send out an SMS?

No, not using the SDK. There is no access to this sort of functionality at all. The best they can do is open the built in SMS application with a pre-filled phone number.

Thanks. The limitations in the SDK is a bit frustrating. I hope they plan to open up more.

Or they can do what some of the social networking applications (the IM clients for example) do and set up their own server to send out SMS.

Yes, but that's a very expensive solution which could easily be solved if Apple opened up the SMS app.

So If I was interested in building an app that generates SMS, who can I talk to about using their SMS gateway?
