Hey my MacBook 1st generation is having some problems such as:

The "y" key all of a sudden stopped working

The faceplate where it says MacBook is coming off

When I got it back from a previous repair the film on the camera is missing

The hinges are REALLY loose

I want to know, can a 14 year old call Applecare? Will I need a credit card number or anything?

Nope - just call and they ask for your serial number (go to About This Mac and click on the OSX version twice).

Just give them a call and just be precise to your problems. They are really helpful.

depends on if he can dial the number or not... just kidding. :p

if you're still under AppleCare then i don't think it'll be a problem. phone service as standard only lasts for the first 60? 90? days though so they might want to charge you for that unless you've extended the warranty

I bought Applecare and registered it on May 29th, so that gives me 3 years of phone service and 3 years of repair coverage.

Thanks!

PS- do I have to pay shipping for them sending a box in so I can put my MacBook in and send it to Apple?

Yeah it is 90 days of support. If the computer has AppleCare then there is 3 years of phone support from the date of purchase. If you are outside of the 90 days and do NOT have AppleCare, then you probably cannot call because you will have to give a credit card # to pay for the phone support.

Added:

No you do not have to pay for shipping either there or back. They will send you the box and you call to have it picked up... all paid for by Apple. They have to determine that what your problem is covered by AppleCare first. If they can't fix the key not working, which could be fixed by resetting the PMU, then they will probably send you a box. I don't think they will cover any cosmetic issues though.

You have full phone coverage then. Apple will send you a box and shipping.

Sweet! Thanks everyone!

Wonder if they might think I accidentally broke something on my MacBook because I am a minor.

It doesn't matter that you are a minor. It will be covered IF you did not damage it. If you did damage it, you don't have to tell them, but they will figure it out when they get it at the repair center. If that is the case, they will call you to give you a price of what it will cost to repair it. Just an FYI.

To make things easier, just pretend your name is that of the person who owns the computer. They don't do much to verify anything.
