I thought I read somewhere that a 5G iPod could be synced with different machines. When I plugged it into my PC (after syncing on my Mac), it said it needed to reformat it for use with my PC. Did I misread something?

(In other words, I have 2 different libraries on my Mac and PC, and I wanted to sync some playlists from my Mac and some from my PC.)

I think if its formatted for a Mac, it works on a PC, but on a PC, it doesnt work on a Mac?

Something like that...

Well kinda right, actually If your 5g is formatted windows it will work both on the mac and your pc. But not vise versa.

I thought your ipod couldn't be synced to more than one music library no matter what platform?

Your iPod must be Windows formatted to work on a Mac and a PC at the same. You can't really sync with multiple libraries. However, turn off automatic updating of your iPod, and drag and drop is your friend.

From what I've gleaned from reading too darn much off these forums...

If your iPod is formatted for the mac, then a windows pc will not recognize it.

If your iPod is formatted for the pc, then both will recognize the iPod.

One downside, I'm not sure is true, is that whatever format you make the iPod (whichever machine you plug it into first), then that is the only kind of machine that you'll be able to make iPod updates on.

I'm also not sure if you'll be able to use a 5g iPod with an older version of iTunes (say v. 4.9).

Can anyone confirm this info and answer my question?

Not out of the box. It can with special software, but practically no one uses it ;)

Correct.

Incorrect. The iPod Updater works as long as it sees the iPod.

I bet you can, but it's definitely not supported by Apple if it's possible.
