can a macbook drive a 1280 x 1024 LCD monitor ?

Hello,
I'd like to know if a macbook ( 2ghz , 1GB ram) can drive a 1280 x 1024 LCD.

I read if it can , but my question is : it leaves black strips on top and bottom cause the aspect ratio is different from the macbook screen (that is a sort of 16:9 ) ?

another question : working in screen replication , or want to use the external monitor to work, the macbook work in clamshell or always report the mirrored screen itself ?

The MacBook will absolutely drive a 1280x1024 screen (although you need an adaptor (Mini-DVI to VGA or to DVI). You mirror the screen. Then propably the external monitor would strech the image (if it can drive 1280x800). You can work in clamshell-mode, then you could use the full resolution of your external monitor. You could also extend the MacBooks screen. Then you could drag windows from one screen to another. You would also have the 1280x1024 on you external screen.

I think there is the blank space on top and bottom of the screen when you view the wide screen format DVDs.
