See, I am going to buy a BenQ monitor which is HD ready and has an HDMI out-let. I want to hook up my macbook pro to it through HDMI. But I was wondering can the macbook pro send out a 1080p signal?

it should have no problem as long as your converter works properly with macs

question: why do you want to use HDMI? DVI handles all the same data just minus the audio signal, which you can patch in another way. With the DVI you've got guaranteed compatibility and the MBP will serve you well.

why is that? I mean, 1080p is pretty damn good!

If I use a DVI cable on a regular monitor, will it look as good as an HDMI on a 1080p one?

HDMI and DVI video is the same. HDMI has added audio, as well as HDCP and remote control support, which you don't get anyway if you connect your MacBook Pro to the HDMI (since you need the DVI->HDMI connector).

I am watching a 1080p movie on my mbp with 2.16 c2d and 2gb ram, and it's still skippy as hell

What's the movie? Container? Bitrate? Codec?

On my MBP (almost same specs as yours), I can play H.264 1080p in Quicktime up to about 8000kbps before it gets choppy.

You're probably better off with the new MBP's as the 8600M GT GPU supports hardware decoding of HD content. This offloads the CPU and keeps the MBP responsive while being able to decode HD content properly.

I just tested a bunch of quicktimes from apple.com
and although my screen is too small, it plays back perfect
(including scaling down). So it should shine on your external monitor.
