Im being offered a MacPro rack mount (intel) at a steal and really want to get it. This is for personal use so I have no rack to mount the thing in :)

Does anyone know if I could somehow buy a case for a regular mac pro and slide it on top of the rack mount? Is it all the same except for the outer shell or is there more to it?

Edge edge question, but hey maybe somone has done it...

The rack drawer slides are IIRC screw-in to the sides of the case, which are flat slabs. You could just sit it on its side, as long as you can situate it with the front fascia over an edge (eg on a shelf). You could probably fabricate a plate for it to sit upon (possibly with stabilising buttresses), that has screw holes aligning with the rail mounts, and feet. Any engineering / machining shop should be able to do that for you.

You'd then have a machine you can open without disconnecting all the cables from the back.

That statement is very important. On a regular NcMP 7,1 you need to pull out every cable from the back of the machine to remove the cover. I hate that😠 Some have worked around the problem by cutting a notch out of the case.

As much as that is a solution to the hated problem, I could never ever do that to such a beautiful case.

It is annoying having to pull out all the cables, especially when they have a habit of falling behind the desk. Grrr!
