I bought an iphone for a friend but he got his own before I could give it to him. They signed me up for a new number but didn't open the box and activate the phone. Will I be able to activate it even after canceling that line?

If you cancel within 30 days (or 14? can't remember) then you MUST return the phone in order to receive a refund. If you cancel after 30 days, you MUST pay the $175 early termination fee, plus the pro-rated amount of service you had - but you get to keep the phone. It will be useless as a phone though you'll probably be able to use it as an iPod Touch if you activate it before canceling.

I never understood this part.... what if you don't want a full refund? Can you just keep the phone?

You can unbrick the phone in iTunes legitimately with a non active sim card...

I can keep the phone as long as it's after 3 days. If I cancel in the first 3 days I get the activation fee back, but have to return the phone. If I cancel between 4-30 I don't have to pay a cancellation fee and can keep the phone. I'm trying to decide if it would be better for me to return it or sell it. If it can be unbricked I'm sure I can get someone who wants to buy it, and then I won't be out my fee.
