Can a SUS read itself?

I'm running SLS as an SUS, it's also farming out profiles to connected Macs, including a preference setting to use the local server for SU. This is great! But, can I get the server to reference itself for its own updates? Currently, it downloads those separately, which seems such a waste of time and bandwidth given that its already downloaded them for the networked computers.

Possibly. Have you tried setting the address of the Software Update Server on the server to localhost?

No, because I couldn't see how to change the address of the SUS for a non-managed computer. How do I do that?

Go to and open /Library/Preferences/com.Apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist.

Add a key named CatalogURL with the value being the address of the server. This should work:

"http://localhost:8088/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog"
